Struggling to find a car...

Featured Replies

Evening, I've looked at two low mileage TDI Octavia VRS, a PD estate and a FL saloon.

Both had under 30k on each and I had to travel, what I consider, a long way to get to them. Both cars also had something to hide and I avoided them like the plague.

I live near Peterborough and apart from the local stealer with two overpriced PD saloons there isn't anything for miles.

Is this partly because the cars I'm after would have been made during the financial crisis and therefore never originally sold/ordered and not ever built.

Are the VRS cars generally considered rare? Why can't I find a nice clean example?

Yep, second hand some octys are rarer than others, in particular the VRS, Scout and 4x4 models. I myself travelled from Huddersfield to Peterborough for my Scout, you just have to keep searching for that good one that's out there. I believe there are plenty of people on here who have travelled much further than me for their pride and joys!

What was wrong with the two you walked away from?

It took me 6 months of looking to find the right PD170 vRS hatchback (the Octavia isn't available as a saloon).

Sorry I thought the car was a saloon as the boot section opened without the rear window going with it?

The blue FL I looked at had what looked to be black alloys on the advert turned out to be very dark purple, whoever painted them did just that - didn't bother the big gauges in the wheel recesses and all the tires on the car where odd brands, the car only had 22k on the clock and seemed to have had a hardlife so far.

The black PD estate I viewed today had significant damage on a rear door and the dealer wedged it before and after the test drive between 2 cars so I couldn't view it properly. Lovely interior but what he claimed to be a carpark dent was a very bad repair, that side of the car wasn't pictured on Autotrader. Shame but was too good to be true.

Have you tried searching the approved used car section on www.skoda.co.uk ?

The rear window goes with the bootlid when you open the boot on the Octavia . The only one I know of that opens just the boot is the superb with the twindoor which can either open as a hatchback or just the boot section

Dark Purple FL Octavia?

Dark Purple FL Octavia?

Blue car, dark purple wheels

What's your budget?

I went to wings and saw them two as well as the rough petrol I went to view. Their car prep is poor indeed! Ended up going private for a petrol 2007 for 6.5k with 52000m on the clock. I'd have to cover some serious miles before I recoup the 4k quid premium for the diesel version. Keep your eyes open in tbe sale section. Good luck

What about a petrol, there are some good price ones out there.

How many miles per year do you do?

Less said the better!!

I've a budget of 8K plus trade.

I'll try and search through Skoda, again!!

I have thought about the petrol although I do about 10 to 15k a year mile wise, what's the tax on a petrol?

Err might have been a VW Passat saloon or a VW Bora and not an Octavia, IMHO.

The new Skodas are good value for money with zero percent finance and VAT free deals(ie 20% discounts). Pity you can not run to that.

My old one is still up for sale at Silbury Skoda but it was over priced a year ago and the price hasn't dropped hence it hasn't shifted [£13,999]. I only paid them £15,300 for it new over 3 years ago. I think they will take offers though otherwise risk it being there another year.

EDIT: The advert says 170bhp but I can reliably tell you it has a few extra ponies :)

Can't see that interest free and VAT off applies to a VRS, I agree that would be an excellent deal.

20% off does apply to the vrs, just got offered it from skoda inverness.

I know but I'd need that and the 0% finance to justify stretching that far.

My old one now at Preston. They've just lopped a grand off it. Any good ?

I nearly went to look at that. I'm sure late December it dropped to £11,500 but when I was looking again early Jan it was at that price!

When I went to wings, they said their finance bloke would be able to offer me a better deal on finance than most and there was room for manoever, when I said interest free they said only on new cars, so I'm sure if you made it a deal maker then they would bite your hand off with 0%.

Just having a browse through here and have seen a couple of posts relating to 0% APR.

It has been mentioned that it is not available on the vRS which is a shame. However, I could not imagine a dealership dropping there interest rate to 0%, they would then have to subsidise the difference in any lost interest thus making the deal not worth while.

VWFS are very competitive but other companys will offer to beat their interest rate but I personally could not see 0% APR.

Cheers, looking at the Passat Highline and Seat Exeo estates now as well, they also can benefit from the 170 lump!

The search continues, found a wrapped hatch tor 20k that looked very unique and a few 2ndhand cars are dearer than new with the VAT offer!

If you are prepared to travel, I would still recommend carstar in Leeds, as he seems to always have the ' higher spec, more desirable ' models of most makes of cars and at competitive prices as well.

What are you trading?

An 8K budget plus trade for a 20K car sounds like you already have a nice motor...
