Mfd2 sat nav question

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a OEM MFD2 sat nav headunit in my octavia. I've just purchased off eBay a OEM iPod connector kit off a VAG breaker and would like to know whether you just plug it in and that's it or whether you have to play and programme the CANBUS system to enable it to work work??

Thanks

Don't quote me on this, but if its the MFD2, not the Columbus/MFD3, and the genuine iPod adapter, then I think you will have bought a VAG branded Dension 100.

Had this on mine when I had the MFD2. I seem to remember that you can set it to control the iPod from the HU or the iPod itself. The HU displays nothing as it treats it as though it's the Multi CD changer, think disc 1-6 was playlist 1 to 6, and you could set it to go up an album or up a track.

So I always used it set to control from the iPod. AFAIK it needed no coding. If you need the instructions they can be got from Dension Support. I seem to remember that you had to press buttons in certain order in a certain time to swap over to the different control modes.

Ok next question just looking through my options. I could sell the mfd2 and upgrade to the Columbus RNS 510 as its got 20gb memory on board plus SD Card reader which is plenty for me at the mo I have 3500 tracks on my iPod and used 16gb so far. Will that need coding to work??and will it direct fit??

Cheers

As you have already got an MFD2, it should be a straight swap as coding and trim are the same.

However you may get a battery drain issue which will require the CAN gateway up dating, and if you have the multi disc in the boot, you may also notice an audible hiss when playing discs. This is because the secondary earth pin needs to be swapped over in the connector block. There is a thread on here that shows you what to swap over & how to do it

When I swapped my MFD2 to a Columbus, I didn't get the battery drain, but did get the hiss. My old vRS was a very early MkII vRS one of the first, on a 55 plate, so I had to swap the pin

In honestly, i'd recommend the Columbus, just make sure it's the one for the Octy, not one from the Superb as there is a difference, and it used to cause some sort of an issue (can't remember what)! Although there may be a work around , or it may no longer be an issue! You'll have to do some checking on here!

Cheers Mike, I was hoping someone would clear up my vagueness!

this is the exact version i've got currently residing in Oldbury depot for my delivery. i hate electronics. i love gadgets but hate all the mumbo jumbo that comes with fitting them lol. so from what i can gather from your info i dont need a canbus for battery drain issues and dont need to connect to a VCDS (what ever that is lol)http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250963849123?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Recieved the Columbus on Monday. I also bought a dension gateway 5 for my iPhone, bluetooth and seeming as I have 2 amps and 3 12" subs with boxes and a pair of 6x9's that haven't even been opened in my attic I have also bought a helix hi/Lo conververter and some amp leads. Just need my car back now once the garage sort out the overboost code problem. Roll on whenever that is..... Then I also have to look forward to a remap 190hp and 300lB/ft torque woo hoo.
