Fault codes

Featured Replies

Hi guys. I have recently bought a cable from GENDAN, and downloaded VCDSlite.

Eventually, i managed to make my mk1 octy tdi(90 AGR) talk to my computer, and was rewarded with the following code and description

:- 17656 P1248-35-00 - - Start of injection timing regulation deviation

Can anyone enlighten me as to its meaning, and possible cause & cure please?

To me, it seems to be running fine, although my fuel consumption has increased slightly over the last few months, and is only returning 60 ish mpg instead of 65. I put this down to the cold weather and dark nights, but maybe not.

Any help really appreciated.

The most likely cause of your MPG drop is the use of Winter Diesel.

One of the most likely causes of fault code 17656 is a timing problem. When was the cambelt last replaced?

Timing belt and pulleys were changed about 10k ago, using genuine vw parts, however, without the functionality of the registered software, i have been unable to check correctly. On a cold frosty morning, the engine starts fantastically, without using the glow plugs, however, once the engine is up to temperature, if i nip into a shop, and then straight back to the car, the engine turns over quite a bit before it fires. I suppose it could quite easily be the timing causing this problem too. Too far advanced do you think?

Sound like the common warm starting problem.

When the engine is cold fuel is delivered immediately, however, when the engine is warm there is a delay if the starter is not turning as fast as it should. Often a new battery fixes the problem. A quick test is to jump start from another car when warm. If it starts immediately a new battery will likely fix the problem.

I cant believe how quickly you people have responded to my post. Thanks for all the advice. The battery is a little lethargic, and when tested with digital apparatus comes up with BAD & REPLACE, so is on the list of things to do. Just needs to keep going until payday. lol ;)
