Pikey coat hanger mod

Featured Replies

Got a new phone recently so decided to wire it to my Connects 2 aux box I had already fitted to play an Ipod. Just had to find a way of attching the phone to the dash. Quick cheap mod with a coat hanger and a spare half hour. The good thing is the phone is hands free. Completely detachable too as it just hooks into the air vents. Not to everyones taste but it works!

Someone watched too much Blue Peter as a kid! :giggle:

nice work

That looks really good, I like it.

Have to say, that's pretty cool. I really should do something similar for my phone to make it easier to use as a satnav (if I run it without being charged then the battery gets shafted within a couple of hours and the cig lighter in the Fabia is in the worst place ever!), I may have to copy that idea and see if I can route the USB charger cable through the centre console and behind like you have, that's much neater.

It looks good! On a par with, or better than, most of the black plastic monstrosities you see!

Might have to make myself one of these. :)

Also - have a look at this, could be quite good mounted there.

Just one word of warning.

I know someone who did something similar. Their passenger tried to adjust the vent and broke it. It's very easy to break the 'pins' at the end of each slat.

Good point about passengers adjusting the vent. It is actually narrow enough to fit on just one vent so I may have to move it over to the right one only. May have to alter the switch position though to get the lead in the right place.

Like the idea of a speedo/dash app too.

Nice, but needs spraying black. ;)

With Jason on this, A lick of satin black, And the jobs a good 'un!

That looks far too professional IMO to be a "Pikey" mod. You could almost sell them to peeps...

Can you show me what kind of coat hanger you used? Wonder if it will work with a 10" tablet........ :smirk:

Yeah looks really neat!

Only thing I would say on a -ve is that it's covering your hazard switch so you may run into difficulties if you need your hazards in an emergency!

OK,

Good points about the hazard warning lights and the passengers fiddling with the air vents.

Quick bit of moving.

Haven't got any black paint so that idea will have to wait. (not going to buy any just for this cos it will have cost me something then :) )

Looks briliant!

Would look even better if you put the cable through a hole in the blanking panel with a small grommet B)

That is very neat wire bending skills there!!.......

AS for the wire through and gromment.......nah......what you need is the cable terminating in a jack socket on the blanking plastic....then a short jack lead to go from this to the phone......

It is allready way to "pro" to be "pikey"...... :giggle:

Got skills

Looks really good.

I've spent £15 getting something that does the same job!! :D

Having seen the reply from fabdavrav I thought what a great idea! I bought a 3.5mm jack extension and a blank switch plate, drilled a hole in the switch plate (which I fortunately practiced on an old blank, as I mucked the first effort up) and glued the extension into the hole. The shortest jack extension cable i managed to find was 10cm which now fits between the phone and the switch blank.

The idea was to have a totally removable bracket and wire but this is just a bit neater.

Thanks for the idea.

Looks brilliant mate. A nice mod that I haven't seen done before and looks neatly done.

Another idea for the above. I don't suppose anyone knows if you could wire in another cigarette lighter equivalent behind the dash somewhere? Cos if I did this, it wouldn't be a jack plug I'd want so much as a way of charging my phone so I can put it in there on navigation mode...the socket in the Fabia is in a much less convenient place than it could be :(
