57 scout diesel mpg on the computer way off

Featured Replies

First of all - Hi Everyone I'm a brand new member - i bought a 57 plate octavia scout 2.0D just over a week ago.

Its a great car and so far I've only done about 200 miles on it but I am completely confused by the instant and average 1 & 2 mpg it's showing. Its was pretty much empty when I picked it up and I put 6 gallons in. The estimated miles to empty is now around 90 but the average (2) mpg is showing as 14 !!! It's obviously way off the mark but how do I get it sorted out? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

btw it has the basic version of the dashboard trip screen (if that makes any difference).

Thanks :)

Reset it.

Trip 1 is for that journey and rests itself after 2hours of the ignition being off.

Trip 2 resets when you reset it. Press the little reset button on the bottom of the right hand stalk for a couple of seconds and you'll see --- on the trip 2 average.

Sorry - I should have mentioned I reset (2) when I filled up and the mpg on (1) is just as weird.

Has the car been sat idling for any length of time? That would drastically lower the average.

Mike

No - just normal motoring - a few short trips and a couple of longer ones... For ref - our other car is an 02 320d tourer that does the same sort of driving/journeys and the OBC never goes below 40mpg on that: That's the strange thing - the Skoda is obviously doing 40+mpg according to real fuel consumption..

The MPG on the MFA on my MKI vRS SE Fabia is way out. About 12% - 15% optimistic.

If I average 50 MPG the computer says a lot more up to 58 - 60 MPG. I check and reset mine every fill up.

Suprised no one has suggested these:

Slow down!

Do you have a flat tyre?

Did you have 4 bikes on the roof whilst you were you towing a caravan?

Don't run you scout on chip oil

Push the choke back in (ah just spotted that you have the diesel)

If you don't have DSG you have to change gear yourself.

Has someone syphoned out some diesel?

Might be a stuck guage - give the glass a tap

Any other ideas? I can live with it being wrong so long as it doesn't point to something bigger being wrong (based on how the value is calculated)...

Thanks :)

If the 'distance to empty' was also way out then I'd be inclined to think that the MPG was genuinely poor and be recommending mechanical advice.

However for the 'distance to empty' to be about right but the 'average MPG' to be so low has me stumped. You can't even blame it on an electrical/sensor issue as one of the measures is OK - unless of course they take their data from different sources, which I doubt.

Are you sure you aren't looking at the 'instant MPG'? This will drop very low when accelerating...

Push the choke back in (ah just spotted that you have the diesel)

Dont take this the wrong way as its a genuine question and i'm not being a prat but......

When was the last time you drove a car with a manual choke?

Personally the last car I had with a manual choke was an old 1980 Austin Metro :giggle:

Everything after that had an automatic choke that you couldnt change.

Ok so I've just done a brim to brim calculation of 38.2 mpg - which is a little lower than I'd hoped considering the it was a mix of motorway and steady A roads (no start stop - all easy miles) - but still a good starting point. The average mpg on the OBC for the trip is showing 13mpg.... So does anyone know how the mpg calculation is made? Does this point to a problem in a sender unit somewhere?

Thanks for any suggestions again....
