Sat-nav power idea. However i need some help.

Featured Replies

Hi all, i am fed up of trawling the power lead from the fag lighter to sat nav on the windscreen. I was wondering if anybody has a neat solution to the problem? I was thinking of linking it up to a power supply under the dash and running a power lead out up next to the drivers side wing mirror. Has anyone else done something simular to solve the problem?

Any thoughts/ideas welcome?

Could you not right up to the power input for the head unit??

Dunno if this work but it works with DRLS. So could be worth a try.

I was going to solder it onto the back of the cigarette lighter but h/u is a good shout as theres a switched 12v there

I've loosely fitted a multi socket under the heater controls and tucked wiring from it un centre console trim to plug into existing socket not ideal but does the job

My solution was to open up the fag lighter plug and take out the printed circuit board.

I bought a small "Project Box" from Maplins.

Unsolder the 12v curled input lead to the PC board and then solder two wires in it's place.

One wire to earth, the other will be live.

Open up the fuse box cover on the side of the dashboard and the small project box will fit neatly above the fuses.

For the live input wire:- I then drilled a 1.5mm hole through a blade on the plastic part of one of the fuses, a blob of solder to hold.

I then fed the sat/nav lead up the side of the dashboard to the windscreen.

What ever you do, do not cut the lead going to the sat/nav as it is a coaxial lead just like a television aerial lead

Somewher on the Yetti forum there are photo's from a member showing you how to do it.

You can get a ready made box all ready to go from www.buybits.com if you dont want to go to all this trouble.

You can get a 10 amp max supply from the glovebox interior light, and it stays on even when the lid is shut.Put it across the input to the glove box switch, and it will go off when the ignition is turned off.Fit a cigarette type hoIder on the end of the wires.I keep a mobile phone ,and charger connected all the time for emergencies.I can also use the socket for a GPS.Because the lead and socket are in the glovebox ,it cannot be seen from the outside, when you park the car.

This is what I did for the power source for my drive recorder:

Now the above is on a Superb Combi, but the principle is exactly the same:

One power socket @ £2.76 (you don't need one with crocodile clips on it - this just happened to be the cheapest available on eBay)

One fused power tap @ £3.95 (for a pair of them)

All hard wired into the fuse panel on the drivers side.
