vRS Suspension mod issues

Featured Replies

Ive recently decided to upgrade the suspension in my car. i came to the conclusion that coilovers are not for me and so went looking for a nice shock and spring setup. i had my heart set on bilstein b12 sportlines (exactly what i want a further 30mm drop over the standard 20mm drop and nice sports shocks) but was told that they are not for vRS but instead for every other model in the range?? so went looking into H&R cup kit but again was told the same thing??

I cant understand why these kits wont fit the vRS model but will fit every other 2wd model as there doesnt seem to be that great a difference in the suspension setup (MacPherson up front torsion beam out back).

I was then told best setup is bilstein b8 shocks with H&R 20mm lower for vRS but this works out more expensive and doesnt give me the drop i want.

anyone have this prob and can anyone help?

cheers cill

Ill be watching this one!

Im in the same boat!!

The reason the shocks won't fit the Vrs is due to the Vrs having different front arb, the Vrs location is hidden than other models.

i see so is there any way to over come this issue? aftermarket arb??

and do mk4 golf gti suffer from the same issue?

No the spring and damper rates will be wrong for the Vrs, same reason golf gti suspension that would fit is not recommend due to the weight of the octy being different

vrs has the same front set up as golf r32,tt,s3 and lcr where the front arb drop link fixes to the shock body where non vrs octys dont,.think thats right?:)

ya thats it! so maybe i could use one of these setups??

as I said before the spring and damper rates won't be right due to the weight differences

you could use lcr springs/shocks etc but as said before the rates would be wrong as leon weighs a bit more then the vrs, think i would just buy the kit for the vrs,and most kit will only drop ride height about 15-20 mm lower then standard,if u wont low u need coilovers :)

Im going to go super cheap and just get the h&r springs until the standard shocks give up

ya my fear would be about the weight difference but was just wondering. anyway what would people recommend for a gppd shock and spring setup? any past experiences with different brands?

Also id like to know whats the front set up like? Ive just put coilovers on a mk5 golf and it was a nightmare! Had to split the hub and what a mission getting the front shocks out! Is the octavia the same?

Howdy, Im getting the H&R 20mm springs and B6's on the car in a weeks time. Worked out bit more expensive than some coil overs, however dont really want to go for coilovers.

I think the 20mm will look good, dont think you will get exactly what you want with out going coilies though... :wonder: ?

You still going for some Ronals?

I've been told the ride on weitecs wound up is quite good

No its not the same. Mk2 Octavia VRS' have the same set up as the Mk5's. It isn't much easier though. I once spent the best part of 5 hours trying to get the front shocks off a Mk4 Golf. If they've never been changed its an absolute ball ache unless you've got big tools!

Oh jesus!! Its a nightmare! I jumped on the disc to pull it out! Rather unconventional but worked

nah it is a dead easy job. I have done it many times now on my VRS emoticon-0136-giggle.gif so many suspension kits off and on...

Thing to do is be prepared. Have good set of tools, spring compressors, range of sockets and torque wrench. Most importantly a Hub splitter tool(£10 from VW) this is a little socket you place inside the hub and turn it to open up the hub to allow shock asm to be removed easy.

Like this one:

If you don't have that tool it can make life hard. Alternatively use a large screwdriver or bar to twist open the hub.

Also have replacement nuts/bolts for Hub/strut/rear shocks in case any seized or snap. As I have removed mine so many times and alway replace with new. I don't have much pars under the car now that are not replaced emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Also a good tip is soak strut/hub asm in WD40 and rear shock bolts to make easier removal.

Really considering the ronals aero but they might look daft unless she is dropped but then again im not sure if i really wanna drop my car that much. (i love her too much to have her scraping the floor :giggle: ) might have to go about some photoshopping see how the look but either way there going to be controversial!

Actually i forgot to ask has anybody got h&r coilovers in there car? they seem to have a wide range of coilovers. anyone have ant past experience?

Or pay unit18 £100 to fit them for you :-)

We can put together a B12 kit for the VRS, just let me know if you need any details or prices.

I switched from a shock and spring lowered set up to Weitec Coilies and the difference is huge. Wish i hadn't bothered with the shock and spring option first as the coilies give me a nice ride height, spot on handling and still give comfortable ride as it is not dropped on it's a**e
