Can't DOS format

Featured Replies

Right ,one for the pro's ,methinks .

Got some HDD , I'm looking at using as "bench stores" = running through a makers disc test ,and if ok ,Fdisk 'ng and formatting ,to hold years of data ,approx now 25gb . Problem is that all of the software I've got either fdisks but won't format in DOS ,or fails to see the drive . However , XP does see the discs ,and will partition /format etc( but in NTFS) .However , I prefer to seem my stores as a DOS hdd ,since I've found data recovery better . I've tried a format in DOS from W2K -still no joy . So what is it - Discs U/S or what .

How big are the disks FAT has a 2GB limit.

John

No such thing as a "DOS HDD".

As jjc says, they'll be FAT under DOS, but FAT/32 has a upper limit.

Never had a problem - my FAT 32 W98 disc will format most stuff - even up to a 400GB disc.

FAT does not have a 2GB limit but a lot of IDE controllers do, this is usually remedied with a firmware flash.

I'de have thought a remedy - but none of my discs have had a problem with any firmware .

yes FAT 32 can format a lot bigger but as said IDE does have some limits to do with "int13" and other BIOS problems, this explains a lot
