Rented DVD is 'Not For Rental'

Featured Replies

Not sure if this is the right place but think it is.

I currently have a subscription to Lovefilm. They have just sent me my latest two DVDs. One of the DVDs clearly states on it 'Not For Rental', yet I have rented it.

1. Are they (Lovefilm) allowed to do this?

2. Who should I go to? Lovefilm (or Amazon who I think own them), Trading Standards or someone else. I do seem to remeber there being some group called FACT but not sure if they apply to the UK.

I am not into downloading or buying pirated software/music/films am most certainly feel that major companies should play by the rules so do not just want to watch and return.

I used to work in a Video Rental Shop and the Videos (VHS and Betamax) used to cost a lot more to buy as they were for the rental market. Not sure if that still applies in the new DVD rental market but I imagine it should.

FACT is for Federation Against Copyright Theft, and yes it's worth brining this to their attention.

Contact them here http://www.fact-uk.org.uk/

I'm not sure if it's illegal or not, but best to 'er' on the side of caution.

And yes, FACT does apply to the UK.

Prob someone trying to cover up a lost/damaged dvd and LoveFilm peeps not bothering to check.

I love FACT. They make a big hoo-har. But what they proclaim to be against isn't copyright theft, it's intellectual property theft... FAIPT doesn't quite have the same ring to it though

This is probably the likely story!

Has this affected your viewing in any kind of way?

Who cares

I would, because not for rental disks are cheaper and if they're doing that I'd want a discount based on their savings ;)

FWIW I do seem to remember noticing this from a provider who used lovefilm to supply disks.

You wouldn't shoot a policeman. And then steal his helmet. You wouldn't go to the toilet in his helmet. And then send it to the policeman's grieving widow. And then steal it again!

No the disc has the proper tamper proof Lovefilm sticker which has their barcode and everything so doubt it is not as simple as that.

Who cares

Me! I pay them to provide a service and if they are taking the cheaper option by buying discs which are not for rental purposes then they cheating me.

Not the viewing experience but it aboutnthem providing a reputable service.

Okay, so got a response from Lovefilm which does tie in with a bit of research I have done. They have investigated and the Disc is marked as not for rental as it was originally intended as a rental copy, they have however confirmed that they have the rental rights for it. It is an old disc and in the early days of dvds this did happen so combined with the fact I have watched it, got a reasonable answer I actually can't be bothered to take it any furher.

Thanks for the advice
