DRL Wiring Help Please!

Featured Replies

Hi guys, hope someone can help. Bought these DRLs and decided to fit them today but have had a problem wiring them.

They come with a control module and the instructions aren't great. I've wired up the red wire to the + ve terminal on the battery and the black wire to the - ve terminal of the battery as instructed.

There is a yellow 'control' wire that it instructs you to simply 'wire to your headlamp'.

I read an old post on here where someone had said to splice this yellow control wire to the yellow and black wire going into the headlight assembly/plug. This would allow the DRLs to switch on with the ignition and switch off when the 'dipped' beam was switched on. This does not work! The DRLs stay on no matter what combination of sidelight/headlight etc is switched on.

Does anyone know which wire/connection I should be splicing/connecting to with the yellow control wire to allow the DRLs to be switched off when I switch my dipped beam on?

I have an Octy vrs TDi PD 57-plate.

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers for your help but still unsuccessful. Can't get either sidelights or headlights to switch DLRs off. I've run out of time and so will have to have another look at the weekend. Cheers again

Mine are spliced with the side light positive wire and all works fine. To be legal they need to go off with sidelights.

Ok but what colour is this side light wire? I've had plenty of time to look at the connector block at the back of the

nearside front headlamp assembly-I've got hands cut to ribbons to prove it!! The headlight rears are an absolute nightmare to access and I dont believe I can remove a headlight assembly without taking the front bumper cover off.

On the connector block I've noticed that the wiring is numbered and the visible sequence is 1,3,5,7,9.

As I said previously, I spliced the yellow control wire into the yellow/black wire and this had no effect.

I also tried connecting the control wire into the +ve brown wire supplying the actual dipped beam bulb and this caused my DRLs to flicker rapidly-not good! Disconnected this sharpish.

Could the problem be that I've connected the red +ve lead directly to the battery instead of a source that is active on ignition?

Sorry mate, not had chance to get to car today, been at work all day. Which switched-live did you use for the +ve supply to your DRLs?

Are you still struggling with wiring problem or sorted now?

Are you still struggling with wiring problem or sorted now?

Hello there, yes I've been working on the wiring this weekend using my multimeter and tested all the outputs on the

headlamp connector on the passenger side. Managed to find an igintion switched live feed on the headlamp as Pin 1 - as people on here have advised. The DRLs switch on with ignition and switch off when ignition switched off. This is right but the yellow control wire will just not work at all no matter where I connect it to on the headlamp loom. I reckon the DRL control module is faulty. I've followed everyone's instructions/advice on here with which pin to connect this yellow control wire to and none of them work. The DRLs are supposed to switch off when I switch the sidelights on-they don't! Tried doing it the headlamp bulb way and that doesn't work either!

Tested it all with the headlamp connected up so that there was a load connected on the loom. What was worrying was the fact that when I connected this yellow control wire to the sidelight, the DRLs both flickered rapidly and then just stayed on!

Going to speak to supplier tomorrow and if no joy then I'll buy another control module. I opened up the module and the electronics

are all sealed in with a resin.

DRL Update:

Spoke to the DRL distributor where I bought my DRLs from and explained the problems I'd had in getting the yellow control wire to send the signal from the headlight/sidelight etc.

The lady I spoke to has said they would send me out a replacement electronic control module for me to replace the faulty one today-no probs!.

Should arrive in next couple of days so fingers crossed I've just been unlucky and got a faulty module. I thought she was very helpful and the service from them was good.

Hope you get it working ok with the replacement.

definately a faulty module mate I have this kit from hids direct and seems to work great i found that its best to connect the yellow cable to the dipped beams positive, red cable, and it works a treat and helps keep the cabling nice and tidy.

DRL Update 2:

Ok this is getting stupid now. I've finally got around to fitting the replacement DRL Control module kindly sent to me

by the supplier. Fitted it saturday and guess what, the exact same thing happened when connecting up the yellow control wire!

The DRLs either flicker rapidly (together) or dont change state at all - they just stay on with ignition switched on and switch off when ignition switched off.

This way with the ignition is correct, but the yellow control wire will simply not switch these lights off when connected to any of the headlamp connectors or sidelamp connectors.

Could the CANBUS system on my octy vrs be causing this? Has anyone else had this problem with DRLs?

I just can be believe that i've got another faulty module! Please could anyone offer any more advice on this/other solution/anything i've missed?

Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Sorry can't help with the wiring but the headlights are designed to slide out on rails to improve access.

Octavia's Headlights are really simple to be removed ;-)
