Headlamp Washers

Recommended Posts

Hi guys and gals,

Could do with a few pointers, I got my VCDS lead delivered yesterday so I decided to scan the car last night and low and behold I think I've found out why I've never noticed the headlight washers working as I got the following fault code:

Car is an 08 Scout with Xenons, has anyone seen this kind of fault previously? I can only assume that the relay is faulty, does anyone know where this is located and/or have a part no. for a replacement?

Also more worryingly I got the following faults:

I am particularly concerned about the "Control Module Incorrectly Coded", anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks for any help you can offer.

Andy.

Hi,

the first fault could be the easiest to fix, worth checking the fuse for the head-lamp washer as I had exactly the same fault with mine. Worth asking others for the coding for the CAN gateway.

Tim

Thanks Tim, don't suppose you know which fuse I should look at?

Cheers,

Andy.

Andy,

just had a look at the coding and it looks OK compared to mine, but it think it may be useful to put your full scan on the forum incase you have other control modules installed (eg tow bar) .

Tim

Thanks Tim, its a long one but for anyone whose interested here it is:

Re the headlight washer, definitely check the fuse. This happened on my MkIV Golf a few years ago. I tried to use them when they were frozen and it blew the fuse! I had a similar issue with my Bora when they stopped working and this was down to moisture in the relay fecking it up!

On the other faults, out of Interest, was your Columbus a factory fit, and do you have a Dension or Connects 2 iPod connection? Also whats the radio reception like?

The aerial fault could be moisture ingress into the amplified base of the mast. There are a few threads on here about it. You also get a aerial fault with an aftermarket fitted Columbus as the factory fit has two aerials and aftermarket one only has one, unless an adapter has been fitted to "fool" it into thinking there are two. Again if its an aftermarket fit of the Columbus, it might simply be that the CAN gateway wasn't coded or it might be that it needs the revised gateway.

If an iPod connector has been added, the extra wiring can be problematic and cause wires to get squashed or "nicked". can wires don't like this and you can get faults logged, but no apparent problems.

Sorry if it was factory fit, not much of what i've said will be of use!

Thanks for that Uncle Bulgaria and yes it was an after market upgrade to the Columbus. The radio reception is great on fm but poor on am, is this where the two aerials come in that you mention?

I have no iPod interface but I fitted the Columbus myself so it was never coded to the car although it seems to work fine, what coding should it have? Would this cause the cd changer fault as well? I never noticed a problem with this as I never use it.

Cheers,

Andy.

My Octavia has exactly the same fault codes for the retrofitted Columbus, nothing to worry about. From factory, your car will only have had one antenna -- as said earlier, the Columbus needs 2, one for FM, one for AM. Even with a Fakra splitter installed, you'll get the fault code. The reason your reception is good on FM and poor on AM is that you won't have an AM antenna plugged in. A Fakra splitterwill give you AM radio, but won't get rid of the fault code.

The gateway fault is showing as a not registered status because it has not been told of the upgrade to a navigation unit. -- simply fix. Go into controller 19 and tick box 37.

CD changer fault could be 2 things -- either it isn't plugged into the quadlock at the back of the Columbus, and the Columbus (in module 37 or 56) is coded to say that it should have a changer there, or it may be that the earth pin hasn't been swapped over in the quadlock connector at the back of the head unit. The earth for the CD changer is in a different position on the Columbus from where it is as standard with the Stream, which would have been in your car from factory. Take the Columbus out, and have a look -- the CD changer connector is the blue plug. Match where the cables are in the plug to the diagram on the Columbus.

Your short to ground on the GPS antenna has only happened once, so it's probably happened when the unit was installed.

It's not showing in yours, but you'll even get a fault code of AUX short to ground if you disconnect the ipod/mp3 player or whatever you have plugged in, and leave the leave plugged into the aux socket in the car! The very fact that the plug slides into a socket with 3 bands of metal for contacts means that you cannot avoid momentarilty shorting the system to ground, and this will show up immediately.

Try clearing the fault codes shown, and see which ones return.

Mike

Mike, thanks for that, explains a lot. I will look at getting the Fakra splitter just so I can get 5live on the odd occasion I listen to it.

I will try that coding for the Nav and see if that clears the gateway fault, and aslo take a look at the CD changer earth pin.

To be honest when I put the Columbus in i worked straight off and integrated straight away with the maxi-dot so I assumed no coding was necessary. Of course due to the 20Gb hard drive I never bothered even trying the CD changer.

I cleared the above codes and the washer relay, gateway, radio antenna and CD changer all cam straight back, but sounds like I at least have the first stages of correcting all of these now thanks to the knowledgable people on here!

A retrofit Columbus may or may not need coding. It all depends on what coding is already in the head unit when it is fitted. For example, a Columbus that has come out of an Octavia with a sound system won't give any speaker output when put straight into an Octavia without, and likewise, one out of a Superb will have the linear equalization etc set for Superb rather than Octy. Best to check that the code is right for your particular Octavia!

Mike

Thanks for that Mike, will spend a bit more time going through all the coding at the weekend.

OK, with regard to the headlamp washers, I have checked the fuse and it seems fine. Strangely fuse 36 was only a 5Amp fuse (Manual says it should be a 20Amp) Fuse 35 next door was a 20Amp fuse (Anti theft alarm) where the manual says it should only be a 5Amp fuse, so not sure if somebody has looked at this issue before and put the fuses back in the wrong places!

Anyway any other ideas or can somebody tell me which relay to look at?

Many thanks.

Apologies, it was a school boy error, I had counted to the wrong fuse as I hadn't realised the fuse box was mirrored on the drawing on the insert card. Yes it was a fuse in the end. MAny thanks for help on that.

Glad to know you are getting things sorted!

Yep, only fault left now is the radio antenna for which I need to order a fakra splitter (although I believe from an earlier post even this won't get rid of the fault report).

The cd changer was a interesting one, seems an extra section has been added into the wiring loom at some point into which three wires for telemute have been added. I've no idea what these are for as the Bluetooth is an aftermarket kit which doesn't seem to have any effect on the stereo. Anyway the cd changer connections hadn't been carried through the cable extension. The fix was simply to take the cd changer connector block out of the connector at the far end of the extension and plug it into the connector that is directly on the back of the head unit, problem solved (well once I managed to find a cd to test it)
