There's something wrong

Featured Replies

Today I replaced both rear brake calipers, carriers and pads, and nothing. Normally I stand back, admire my work and think "good job". But nothing, not even the warm glow of saving a small fortune! I'm even contemplating booking it in at the local garage for Coilovers. I think I'm going to call the doctors in the morning.

OK.

have i missed somthing here?

Yep I think you should.......

The thought of paying someone else to work on my car would take me into a cold sweat...

I see someone understands! Appointment booked, I hope my doctor has a quick cure as things could get rather expensive. Lol.

Lol. I understand. But I am a very novice mechanic, have done a few bits to other cars i've owned but am getting very nervous at the thought of changing my rear pads and discs on my RS next weekend.

Change rear pads is pretty easy - one of the easiest jobs you can do (front FS-III callipers are even easier). Ensure you have the correct sized spanners for the guide pins, and be gently with the bleed nipples.

Oh, and a proper windback tool is a real bonus - I made my own, but I am tight.

when i changed my rear pads i never touched the bleed nipples, and everything went fine, :)

Yep rear pads are a pretty easy job, did them on my VRS and another members.

Don't forget to re-adjust the handbrake afterwards as the cable will have loads of slack in it once you've put new pads in.

The windback tool is pretty much essential, it's a PITA trying to do it with circlip pliers or similar:

I DIY'd most small jobs on my Octy like oil changes, thermostat, light levelling motor etc. but with big jobs like belt & pump change, fitting coilies etc I wasn't confident that I'd be able to do them properly over a weekend and as I needed the car daily it went into a garage for those.

Its rear pads and discs i'll be doing so hopefully it will go ok. I have managed to borrow a wind back tool from my fitter at work which is a bonus. I replaced fronts and rears on my Signum (with the guidance from another member on the Vec-C forum) but that was over a year ago now and it was the first time i'd dont it. I'm sure it will be roughly the same. I found a guide on here for changing them on the Fabia vRS am I right in thinking it will be the same process for the Octi?
