rear brakes squealing

Featured Replies

hi all right bit of a problem at the moment as it started a while back. i started hearing an awful squealing noise from the brakes and at first it sounded like the front brakes but it was the back brakes stange thing is it takes a while to produce the sound but normally half way threw the journey it starts out a soft noise but gets much worse as you continue on and stops if u put the brake on suddenly then take it off i have had it looked at a vw specalist and he sprayed some wd40 inbetween the wheel hub and the caliper area as the disks and pads r only 6 months old and were fitted by himself and sure enough noise went for 3months but recently the noise has now started again and its the same problem and i am just wondering if anyone has experienced this problem and knows a way of sorting it

thanks all

thanks mate so i have looked threw that thread and i take it that thing on the bake of the brakes was the cure and is all sorted ?? as the noise as one person said is when i am going forward but it happens more going forward then say when i am reverseing ?? and what does that thing on the back of the brakes actually do ??

In a nut shell the reason for the squeal is due to lazy caliper return mechanism on the back of the caplier. The rear hand brake cables that are attached through that bracket cause the bracket to not completely return back to it's datum position when handbrake is released. This then effectively causes slight dragging of the rear pads to the disc. The noise is amplified through the resonance of the rear beam thus sounding worse than it is and sounding like a mooing from a cow on heat :giggle:

Sound gets worse on colder days.

VW /Audi and Skoda recongised this and recall occurred in early years under warranty.

The fix instead of a caliper redesign is a swap of the rear caliper cable return bracket that is better designed and has a rubber ring on the back that also acts as a resonance reducer to compensate the rear beam. It works strangley enough not 100% but way better.

Also seems to work better with std rear pads

Hope this helps.

ah that really helps alot thanks bowders 1 as that would explain why the noise happened when i put the handbrake on overnight for example and when releaseing it it wouldnt start straight away but once the brakes were applied and then released and again applied it would make the sound as the caliper return mechanism will work the back pads not only on the handbrake but also when the brakes our applied. the other question i wanted to ask is if for say my calipers were sticking as the garage was suggesting the last time new calipers what would the feeling be there ?? also how much is that caliper return mechanism and also what is the part number ?

thanks all ]

Part number is 1J0698998 - i got a quote from TPS of £100 :@ However managed to pick it up on Ebay for £35.

It has virtuallly eradicated the mooing noise which was most apparent when reversing. It does crop up every now and again, but usally only after the wheels have been washed or when ive been driving on dusty/loose surface roads.

Interestingly i have noticed some slight squaleing under braking in normal driving in recent weeks, however i am of the thought this is probably due to salt/spray from the winter roads more than anything given how infrequent it is, and how its only cropped up in the pants weather!

right have been in touch with both tps and skoda both our exact same prices of 131.17 and altho i gave the part number both seem abit clueless as to what it is i said anti squeal brake kit but they said something else and also they said it will take 5 working days to arrive

....Never had this problem.....

.........until just fitted new ECP Pagid discs and pads. Took care using proper wind back tool and pagid ceratec grease on pins etc.

Now it moos like beggary every time I reverse. Also worse with cold weather. :wall:

upside is just sailed through MOT yesterday with zero advisories.

yes you can get this issue strangley worse with none std pads. It is always worse in reverse.

Also though you may find you need to bed in pads for a while to get them balanced.

Personally, I wouldn't be spending that much - its just not worth it for something that is an annoyance, rather than a failed component.

The fortunate thing is that most people are "Clueless" as to what they are, as such i would just keep checking ebay/google every few weeks, one will come up every now and again and you should be able to pick it up for £35ish

Alternatively, I have heard of another fix which involves fitting some cheap £5 springs from a VW Sharan to improve the calliper return. Have no experience of this fix myself, but have heard a bit about it: http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=207880

well i have tryed ebay but no matter what i type in it cant seem to find it as i dont really know what to type in tbh and also when i had alook at it on my car it does seem very badly corroded and i remember that when i took the car to the garage to get it looked at he also noticed it was badly corroded and sprayed some wd40 and sure enough it stopped but 2-3months have gone by maybe longer then that and the noise has returned so i would say it could do with renewing so i aint going to wait any longer as the noise is just so hair pulling annoying
