rear brake squeal fix

Featured Replies

right everyone, its well overdue for me to try and give something back after all the help and advice people have gave me on this excellent site. it might be common knowledge and done to death but if it helps just one person then it will be worth it. about 6 months ago my car started squeaking from the back brakes, only in reverse just after replacing the discs and pads. after searching on briskoda it was clear that it was a common problem. i found a discussion off the fabia forum talking about a spring that fits to the rear caliper aiding the arm connected to the hand brake cable back to its proper position. the theory being that this arm wasnt returning fully therefore the hand brake was binding on just enough to cause the squeaking noise. however, when i checked my brake caliper with the hand brake off it was clear that this wasnt the problem as the arm was returning all the way back to its stop. so, after speaking to a very helpful fella called dave at my local skoda dealer, he told me that he was issued a memo a while ago about this problem and a new type of rear pads are now made to solve this problem. luckily he had a set in stock. i nearly fell over when he told me the price......£11.20..all with new bolts and slider brackets. so the part number is 1U0698451A. the only difference as far as i can see is on the back of the brake pad there is a rubberised cover but he assured me the pad material is also changed. sorry to ramble on but like i say if it helps someone then its all good. just one last thing, when i bought the replacement pads { the squeaky ones } a while ago i got them from a motor factors thinking they would be cheaper than main dealer prices, they werent!! and a hell of lot noisier....

Thanks for that item reference! What makes the Alhambra springs better for the job, in your opinion?

Thats another job to ad to the list then, that noise is doing my tree in

yeah, it was doing mine in too, it seems right at a pitch that makes you cringe too, like a nail on a blackboard! i am happy to report it has solved mine. for £11.20 it is definately worth doing. just make sure you get the updated pads though quoting the part number i mentioned because i think skoda still make two types of brake pad, this type should solve the awful noise.

That's annoying because my pads were new from TPS a few weeks ago , and squeal like buggery. Yet another VAG 'quiet fix' without actually admitting there was an issue to start with.

Not sure how you are still getting that Part number 1U0698451A, as it has been superseded to 1U0698451K and has a price of £33.59 (not inc VAT). So unless you got the last one the Skoda Dealer's will point folks to the revised pads. Well they are in Fareham anyway??? Plus the revised pads do not have any rubber backing. My guess is Skoda want folks to buy that stupid upgrade pack to fix the squealing which is £104...

Hello Guys,

I have a 2002 Octavia L&K 1.8T with 53,000 kms. Just a few days ago, my car has beguining to make that squeal noise when I reversing. Its only doing it in one rear wheel.

So, the only way to fix this problemo, eaven if the brake pads are no worn is changing the rear brake pads???

THX,

Isaac

Can anyone else verify whether they can still get these revised pads with rubber backing?

I had pagids put on a few weeks back and it solved the reversing noise at first, but recently has returned yet again :dull:

I would question if it was that specific pad really fixing the problem, as why would Skoda bring out a specific caliper fix and not by using just a pad. I am not saying it did not fix meaty101 car, but maybe that was luck or just a different set of pads. When I spoke to Skoda they make no reference to a specific pad fixing the squeal but point people to the caliper kit??

Be nice to have more evidence from other folks..

Good point. I have found whenever new pads are fitted (twice now), the noise is gone, only to start up after a few weeks. It will be interesting if Meaty101 is still noise free after a month or two of use.

It just doesn't seem right to have to fork out over £100 in parts alone for a Skoda fix for something that is some kind of design flaw. They should really be selling these kits for cost price and fitting them FOC IMHO.

+ 1 there.

As some folks that have changed to new pads thought they cured it only for it to reappear.

Maybe we should list a "rear pads not to use"

For me it would be Mintex extreme. They squeal really bad. They have a adhesive backing that sticks to the piston and caliper and maybe that causes worse friction?

I had the same trouble and all I did to sort it was put grooved discs on. sorted it right out.

my rears are starting to squeek again now but only going fwds. so it could be that the ultimax pads are worn down since Jan 10. will be looking this next week.

I put them on as the std rears were shot after 4 years and the ultimax were only 15 notes.

all very valid points. the problem might return in a few weeks and i will keep everyone posted how things are. however i am just repeating what the bloke told me in the parts dept at a skoda dealer. i told him what the problem was and he never mentioned anything about an upgrade kit to me. what is this upgrade? the part number on the back of the pads is 1U0698451A. if it helps they have textar t4822 stamped on the back and what could be a date? 02/07. so, if they are 3 years old chances are there will be a new pad produced now.

Guess there desinged to fully release the handbrake and bring the pads far enough off discs to stop the squeel

tech1e cheers for that. and does it work? i am now thinking why bring this kit out if brake pads would solve the issue. maybe my squeek is to return!

The brake pads came out when I was at Skoda first some 5 years ago with the black backing pad on them and didnt work. This kit had already been out for other models and was also fitted on some MK3 Golfs for the same issue. Its a damper that counter acts the resonance in the caliper that makes the noise, the caliper basically acts like a tuning fork.

ok. so my squeek will return! was the kit easy to fit? and was it £104 as mentioned?

Yeah easy to fit and shockingly enough about 100 for a few bits of rubber and metal brackets.

  • Author

yeah it is a scandal. however, the noise is so bad i would pay just about anything! money well spent then?

  • 4 weeks later...

Can we please make this a sticky but with the ACTUAL fix for this problem on it? Judging by the amount of views this has had it is a very common problem and I for one would so appreciate a definitive answer!!!!
