Feasible or daft?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Currently I have the car in my signature, and while its been a great car, I've had two of these now and fancy something with a bit more pep. However, I have an idea.

Currently, my car has 43k on it and I am wondering if any of you think my idea is good, or a waste...

I have been thinking about another vRS, a petrol one, and there are a few on the Skoda network that take my fancy. Slightly more miles, but the prices are right for a straight swap.

Cars like mine are going for about the 8k mark, and vRS are going for 6.5 to 7. Now would it be feasible to go to a dealer and approach them with a view to do a straight swap?

Opinions please :-)

In my experience dealers try to avoid any deal where there isn't cash coming their way, but its not unheard of.

Worth a punt? What's the worst that can happen?

Certainly worth a punt, but IMHO they'll want to make £2k on the deal or it won't be worth the effort... i.e. they might ask you for about £1,000 to change.

My thought. Thing is, they could take my car and get that up for 8k so they could make more profit when you consider they traded in the vRS...

  • Author

Yeah thought as much El Dingo.

My alternative is a stage 1 remap ....

Yeah, seems about right to me. Would give them a profit when they sell your car, so seems like a decent deal.

Ok try it, suck it and see then

+1

Tried something similar last year, dealers weren't interested.

However that was me going from petrol to diesel. I was told big petrols were not shifting so a dealer might see you as an easy way to move on a large petrol car and get an easy to sell diesel.

Worth a few cheeky attempts I'd say.

Have mailed 5 dealers.

At the end of the day I'm not losing anything by asking.... So ill keep this thread updated if my line has any proverbial nibbles

Update

Not one single reply :)

Going to save up now and get something newer next year instead

Got the itch for something fast and silly, and something that might not be a Skoda................

If you go inside and they know you like a car then they will try to work the spell on you so be careful lol!

Stage 1 remap time tbh! Would transform car and might be enough to make you want to hold on another few years and save a lot of dosh! Some places offer a trial on remaps if you are not impressed to be returned to stock and refund within 30 days. Thats where my money went!

Shark Performance and their STS tempted me, OBD job.

Is there a torque limit for DSG 'boxes? I wonder what that is.

I'm aware that a Stage 1 on my car would yield 170hp, so basically vRS performance. Might be the shot it needs :D

Not sure what diesel the OP has [using mobile version] but assume the 140bhp. My mate had a Revo stage 1 on his golf tdi 140 and it was as quick as my old cr vrs which was also stage 1 and circa 204bhp. So in summary a remapped 140 should be quicker than a standard diesel vrs.

There is a torque limit on the dsg box but that wont be an issue on stage 1.

Expect 170BHP at stage 1 and not more than a standard vrs. The difference in drivaability and not just speed will be a very nice surprise for you. It will transform your car.

Go for the stage 1 map and keep the car for another year or two. In that time save as much as possible and if big petrol engine cars are still not selling well pick up a bargain. A remapped 170 bhp dsg Octy isnt exactley slumming it while you saving some dosh:rofl:

Yeah, 170 i'd probably be happy with and not worry *too* much about the next car.

I think I'll have a budget of around £15K to play with come the end of next year. What to get?

Can anyone suggest anything? £12K gets me into BMW 535d territory :|

Do you want another diesel or are you thinking of something a little more indulgent and of the petrol variety?

R32, S3, Older RS4, EVO, M3, M5 etc

I'm only doing 8K per year at the moment.

Was looking at the Focus ST (Wife will have one in a bit, so no point two of us having one),Octavia vRS (Had one), Golf GTI (Smaller Octavia) Leon Cupra (Like that it's basically a quicker Golf, and currently my pick), S3 (thought they'd be expensive, but I think I could afford one), Honda Civic Type R (Tried one, ride is rock hard)

You mention R32, S3, older S4... maybe I'm not looking "high" enough. :D

Any car I do consider has to be at least a 2005 05, as that's my private plate...

EDIT: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201210454714689/sort/priceasc/usedcars/maximum-age/up_to_5_years_old/price-to/15000/maximum-mileage/up_to_60000_miles/model/s3/make/audi/page/1/radius/1501/postcode/cf329aq?logcode=p

now we're talking.

8k a year, you wont be financially worse off swicthing to petrol. And petrol is sooooo much more fun, lol.

At 15k budget you start entering into the world of the older S3, M3 etc You might even get pretty close to an RS4. I'm talking decent well spec'ed and looked after cars not some ebay dodgy cheap deal. You can get a lot of car for your money. Even more critical is that you look around and do your research first. You defo get what you pay for when you dip your toe in this kind of water. I'm sure you know but remember the running costs on cars like these are significantly more then running a daily diesel car.

But they are worth it

To be honest, I can't see my mileage going up any time soon - so my philosophy is going for a silly-quick car shortly because I believe there will come a time when it just won't be possible, and we'll all be driving around in Nissan Leaf's or something.

I think the problem is that I don't really *know* what to go for. I've been blinkered with Skoda for a while (I've owned them since 2003 with 2 SEAT Ibiza's in there) and while I've enjoyed the experience, I feel I want to branch out and get something really mental because my wife and I can afford to run a pair of cars like this (and we both like driving). She hasn't even pushed 4K onto her year old car yet!

The S3 looks a nice bet, 40K miles and 07 plate for around my budget will be ideal. I think I need to go back to the drawing board - I had my heart set on a Seat Leon Cupra, I think I need to stand back and look at everything on a wider spectrum. :D

IMO if you can afford it and it suits your lifestyle its a no brainer to me.

You like driving. You have the money to buy and run the car. You are "mildly" concerned the opportunities for owning a silly quick car will be less and less from now on.

Dont limit your self to a Cupra R - Go for the big guns

Decide what power train you want (4x4, FWD, RWD) and then make your short list.

I'd be test driving an S3 and M3 for sure but i've always wanted an RS4 so i'd be holding out for one of those

I'd say that 225-250bhp really is the limit for FWD unless there are some very clever tricks going on.

The thought of 4WD appeals greatly - hence S3 (4WD+260bhp)... /drool

DO IT.

My mate recently sold his S3 sport line for a bigger family car. Once you get used to the pretty hard ride he says it was the best all rounder hes ever had. Very quick and sure footed when you want some fun and really easy to drive on the school run/round town.

Now for pure quickness he has had an EVO FQ and that used to scare him lol (not to mention the servicing every 6k miles)

Watch this space (well, maybe not - it will be a while before I do this, but looking like I should be able to pull this off towards the end of next year..........)

Cheers for some decent advice! Everyone else I asked just moaned "oh you change cars too often". ffs, I want some decent car ideas, not life advice :p :D

Do you have children and do you need 2 family style cars?

What about keeping the ST if you need the space for anything and getting a 2 seater for both of you too enjoy?

What about a Z4 3.0i, I thought it was a lovely machine and fast. Or the same engine in the 130i, a right little Q car.

A boxster (decent engined one) ? I had an MX5 for a while and it truly was a delight to own until it got out my system (no I'm not a hairdresser lol)
