Octavia TDi Smokey start up

Featured Replies

Hi, i noticed last week on a windy day, theat when starting the car on a coldish day around 1 degree mark i get smokey start up that lasts about ten seconds is this normal and can it be cured... it doesnt seem to last long at all, so am i just being paranoid????

Many thanks

Dave

What colour is the smoke? black/blue or whitish? any sort of smell to the smoke?

Could be the early signs of a coolant issue (ie. head gasket) if white, or maybe a leaking injector is diesely in smell or a leaking oil seal if blueish....

Any drops in oil or coolant levels?

No apparant fluid changes, but will monitor after my 200 mile trip this weekend, need to get someone to start car for me for colour/smell, but havent noticed anything since weather warmed up.

Ive noticed mine produces a small bit of very slightly blue smoke on startup. i think that is normal, if its thick however its not normal.

definatly not thick and lasts only about ten seconds, do get a dust cloud when i accelerate hard on the motorwat, but it can only be seen at night when a car behind me, hence lights make it obvious.

Start the car and hop out and have a sniff!

You need to accelerate harder and more often - although I do like it when the car behind me vanished into a cloud of my black fumes. Sadly I drive the car a bit harder these days so covering cars in black smoke are fewer and far between.

I noticed that you mentioned the smoke goes away after warm up but reappears on acceleration on motorway. I had a similar experience some time ago and found a small hole ( caused by chaffing on pulley ) in the pipe coming up from the intercooler. This caused overfuelling during acceleration hence the smoke............. might be another area to investigate?

GOOD LUCK
