bumper cracked - repair or replace?

Featured Replies

So, I think I short of had it coming with all my praise for DSG etc. etc. To cut it sort, I had to reverse to an uphill ramp at almost 30 degrees of angle, while the space was JUST adequate for me to fit as there was my friends car already parked up there. My front wheels were exactly in front of the 10 cm pavement so they had to climb this and then immediately stop as there was my friend's car behind. 1st try with slow throttle, car can't get up. 2nd try, the same. Now due to this awkward modulation of the throttle that DSG has, you cannot get the exact amount of thottle that you ask, I mean it is not linear. Ok, I said, I'll give it a last try. I am pushing the gas pedal only JUST deeper, by an amount which in a manual box would suffice to just climb the ramp and then stop, and what do you know? It shoots back and CRASH.... Emotions are not to be described apparently, and even now, I think It is my fault and only mine. If you have a kid that is not good at math, you don't suggest he studies applied sciences.

Anyway, what's done is done, good thing is my friends car didn't get a scratch, while mine strangely developed a crack on the top, flat side of the bumper (due to stretch?) but nothing on the actual side that crashed with the other car's bumper. Pictures follow. Now the questions are:

1) Does anyone think it is repairable? I think not but I'm not an expert at all.

2) In case of replacing, I assume it needs the wholw rear bumper replaced right? (minus the park sensors). Now, as occasions like this is a true dealers delight for a rip-off, I wonder If I could find the appropriate part myself and even fit it myself or otherwise go to a local generic repair shop. I did a quick search on skodaparts and superskoda but I only found rear bumpers for Octavia.

I am in a bit of a hurry to fix this, as I am about to do the first big service of the car (15K KM) and I was waiting for this to mention the rear right "clunk" sounds that I hear. Now I am almost sure that If they see the cracked bumper they will blame this for the sound and refuse to fix it. So, any suggestions will be appreciated...

Same happened to me, sorry to hear that :(

For repair, it was reshaped by heated press to fix the convex, without hot press the paint will be cracked over time and the lid of the trunk will touch and etch the bumper paint.

Now it is OK since 5 months after repair (press + repaint)

Thanks for you reply. Was it caused by a similar misjudge of the DSG's ability to reverse in a limited space?

Also, did the heated press + repaint bring it back to original form or it left small marks of the crack? I didn't understand If your photo is before or after the repair!

PS. It cracked on the exact same place as mine! the flat top... I wonder If its meant to be like that, in order for small crashes to guide the crack to that area and make it easier to repair?

i would definently replace the bumper.

The pic above is "the before" pic. A driver hit the car when I waiting on the red traffic light :(

Heated press + repaint brought it back to its original form, now no marks from the crack or convex.

This is the after pic

aha! looks a bit better now! :p

Did u do everything yourself?

A friend of mine is a talented body shop techie, he fixed this.

So, no call needed to the insurance company :)

Ah the joys of a manual box

Ah the joys of a manual box

Hater

I think its getting used to DSG in reverse, few times I have prodded the pedal a bit hard and gone back too fast when I first got the car. Fine now.

As for repair or replace, look on ebay quickly and see if any available, if not repair will be £150 ish.

New bumper will be £200 to paint plus the part.

Where it is a repair should be ok. No guarantees though!

Thanks for the replies. The heat+paint thing sounds good but I don't know anybody around here that does such stuff. I could have a look but I'm not hoping for much. Dealer expectedly quoted £530, there goes a remap I say... The problem with ebay is that since its a vRS version (diffuser etc.) that makes it a lot more hard to find one, let alone painting in the correct color. So unless I am lucky enough to find someone using heated press around here, it's the dealer's way...
