New to Skoda

Featured Replies

Hello everyone

Thought I should say hello as I've already popped a question after a bit of an erratic start to Skoda ownership.

Gary here from Eastbourne, East Sussex.  Married, two kids, one just leaving college, the other just leaving school and a tortoise with no name.

Just got a 2005 Superb V6 TDI Tip, which is my first Skoda, although until last July I had a not dissimilar B5 Passat Estate.  Missus has a Mk3 Golf TDI which is showing every sign of outliving me.

I passed my Passat on to a mate last July when I decided to have a fling with a 9-5 Saab Aero (HOT).  The Aero was a fantastic car with what can only be described as 'brisk' pace.  Unfortunately this came to an abrupt demise in the snow at the beginning of the month when I hit ice and clumped a kerb taking my Dad home, all but taking the NSF wheel off.  The car was a total loss, so I've been on my pushbike for a couple of weeks.

Test drove a few cars.  Quite liked the B6 DSG Passat and Saab 9-3 TiD, really didn't like the BMW 120d and nearly bought an '09 1.8 Avensis, but it just felt a bit too gutless (recognising that most things would after the Aero).  But I settled on the Superb as it just felt 'right'.  Was going swimmingly until I saw the service history and noted that in its six years it hadn't had a cambelt change.  The garage agreed to do this and I got it at the beginning of the week, but it didn't want to start or run and certainly didn't sound right.  The garage came out, turned it over and quickly diagnosed what they said was a failed tensioner, but was actually the damper they'd not replaced.  Thought about walking away, but I've been happy with their response and they've confirmed no engine damage and it's on a 1yr warranty, so here we are.

I'm sure there are loads of pics around the forum, but here's a few of mine.  Excuse the quality, but me and Sally's (wifey) camera don't see eye to eye on many things:

Regards

Gary

Nice car... handsome

Cheap luxury motoring IMHO

Enjoy!

Hi and welcome aboard.

Welcome. It would be interesting in due course to hear your thoughts on how the Passat and Superb compare.

Thanks for the welcomes folks :hi:

Welcome. It would be interesting in due course to hear your thoughts on how the Passat and Superb compare.

Well aside from having the same weak points, I'd say the Superb is better. Nicer interior & seats. Loads of legroom - which I need up front (I'm 6'4") and my adult sized kids need in the back. It feels more settled on the road - I put an H&R ARB on the Passat to stop the front-end wallow, but the Superb won't need it. This is my first 6-pot car, so I've nothing to compare it too, but I think the mpg won't be too dissimilar. And although I loved my Passat (still do), I prefer the look of the Superb. Not sure what it is, might be the extra floor pan making it a bit sleeker. Favourite gizmo has to be the white LEDs in the interior door handles B)
