Low mileage - wear and tear

Featured Replies

Hi

Moving on from another thread about buying a used car, where wear-and-tear was indicated to be a potential issue on low mileage cars, two things:

1) Doesn't the annual service sort these?

2) I have in the past bought from the appropriate dealer and got one of those AA checks also.

I have quite low mileage so am wondering if I need to direct the garage when next service due, presumably meaning items which would a potential buyer would look for.

Thanks a lot

My comments were directed to low mileage cars which may have spent their lives doing very short journeys to and from shops; may not have been serviced annually because they had done minimal miles since the last service; and may have been in the hands of the mechanically insensitive. My mother-in-law has had a number of such cars and we were foolish enough to buy one from her! I also know an elderly gentleman who did not check the oil level in his car for 18 months, and only took it to a garage whenever something broke. And yes, it was low mileage. I don't think that members here are likely to fall into that category!!

This is a very good point. My mother has an immaculate x reg 1.4 polo 16v 100 bhp.

She has done about 4/5000 miles in 5 years just popping to the shops etc.

It is serviced properly but there are always problems with things like brakes etc because it is just not used enough. In fact it probably never reaches operating temperature which I presume can't be good (engine wear etc)

This is probably an extreme example but it is starting to get a bit expensive now!
