54 Plate Mk 2 Octavia Sat Nav Systems

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, your help would be required.

As my wife and I cant afford a Superb Estate, we've decided to plough money into our trusted 54 plate Mk2 Octavia. We do a lot of European Travel in it and I would dearly love to replace the radio / CD console unit for an original Sat Nav one. Two questions, what was the model number of the original sat nav option (prior to the slight interior upgrade in about 2007 i think) and also, are you guys aware of any other options there are ?

Thanking you muchly

David

The Columbus is way more advanced than the older MFD2.

No need to run the map from a disc - mapping stored on a partition of the 30GB HDD.

Memory card slot for music

Touch screen rather than just knobs and buttons

DVD player built in for watching films - when parked naturally

Music storage partition on the HDD (20GB on most general firmware types)

3D mapping with vastly improved graphics as well as split screen guidance.

I retrofitted a Columbus to my previous Octavia and it is a fantastic upgrade considering how simple it is. It's quite a common upgrade around here.

The only other part you need is a new plastic surround which is easily ordered from a Skoda dealer.

Does anyone know if there are any user guides to retrofit a columbus into a mk2 octavia?

This is what I used when I fitted mine.

Cheers guys, much apprecaited. I'm assuming the electrics are all pretty straight forward ?

Sorry, must read fully before replying in future.

"a tweak of coding with VCDS"....forgive my innocence, but what does this mean ?

Yes electrics are straight forward - Unplug old stereo and plug in new one, plug in gps device and stick to cross member behind the top heater ducts (Double sided sticky tape).

One or two things I have heard as follows:

  1. You might want to check the pin number of the CD changer ground connection as I have heard this could be in a different position in the connector between the Columbus and others (Although this was not the case on mine) - compare the pin out stickers on the old and new units.
  2. If you want to listen to AM broadcasts (I.e. 5live) you will need a Fakra splitter as your aerial will only have one connection whereas the columbus has two (FM aerial and AM aerial)
  3. With mine it worked fine without any coding, however when I did connect VCDS it through a CAN Gateway error for incorrect coding, the fix was to tick the box in the long coding helper for "Navigation Installed", although I realise I was possibly lucky that no other coding was required (Your friendly local Briskodian with VCDS can probably help you out with this if needs be)

Oh and on pre 2007 cars there maybe a battery drain issue which would need you to upgrade your CAN Gateway.

Good info above.

I am considering a columbus upgrade to a 55 plate Ambiente. One of the main requirements though is for bluetooth phone functionality. I don't have Maxidot. Is it possible - happy to purchase VCDS

Or should I look at one of the Chinese all in one units - I'm handy with a soldering iron!!

Thanks

Nick

Yeah seriously avoid the chinese units , i recently got one from Erisin , worked fine for a couple of months , then started failing , currently in process of trying to sort it out. Doubt i will get any satisfaction. They only look similar , but not a patch on the original ....my problem is all my music is wma encoded , none of factory units play wma. So i did not have much of a choice. Live and learn. :@ .

Most of my music is wma and it all plays fine on the Bolero in our Octavia
