Gearbox oil question

Featured Replies

Hi,

I seem to be getting more used to the VRS now after the last few weeks and am gradually getting on top of the faults. When I first got hte car I thought the gearchange was notchy, but thought it was just me not being used to the change.

However, I was reading a couple of threads on here, and it appears it's not me after all - feels good to know I still have all my driving marbles. Anyway, in these threads people make mention of a modified gear oil from when the car was built.

Haynes says it should G50 SAE 75W/90, and I have tried most keyword combinations in the search box, but for the life of me I cannot find any info on the new spec oil. Does anybody know what it is?, I was on the mk4 golf forum earlier for something for my father in law, so I was curious there and they say G60, but no SAE rating is listed. Does this apply to Skoda as well?.

Apparently this makes enough of a difference to make it worth trying, so any help would be really appreciated.

All the best

Phil

75/90 TPS 2l £11 OEM gear oil, job done. Dont put any thing other than that in them they dont like it. i had "aftermarket" gear oil same grade etc and i changed it after 2 days as it made the gears very notchy and hard to engage.

Thats what I was going to put in, but several people on here are saying that Skoda dealers are now putting in a different grade oil now to ease this problem - thing is nobody seems to know exactly what it is. I agree on the VAG oil only bit, it's just this different grade thing that is getting difficult to sort out.

Worth checking your linkage adjustment too (there is a video on youtube showing how to adjust it), and also a worn dogbone mount can not help matters either.

I suggest you use VAG gearbox oil. A lot of owners have tried other oils, and whilst some don't have a problem, many end up with a 'notchy' gearchange

VAG G60 is a newer, but backward compatible, version of VAG G50. Neither specify a grade and are supplied in 1l bottles.

Ok, thats what I was reading on the mk 4 forum that G60 was the new oil to use, so I'm off down to the Skoda dealer to get 3 litres (1 to flush the box). I'm told that 1.9 litres is capacity is this correct?.

Thanks everybody for the answers.

Phil

i would not bother flushing it, waist of oil. its just going to run down the inside of the casing. if theres bits in there then you have more problems than dirty gear oil! any little bits will come out with the old oil.

Fill it till it comes out the filler hole. 1.9ltr is about right yes.

Make sure you can get the filler plug out before trying to remove the drain plug.

Definately - played that game on my primera gt and found out the hard way :notme:

VAG G60 oil, don't put in 75W90 it'll be crap

go to a dealer with your VIN and ask to buy 2 litres of gear oil - will be about £12

Are you saying the G60 oil or the 75W90 is c**p?, sorry just come back from hospital anasthetic and am a bit slow tonight.

the OEM oil is grade 75/90. ignore the grade... as i said in my first post, Just goto skoda and get 2l of gear oil. As matie said, it will be about £12. I got the OEM stuff from TPS and it was £11 delivered.

you been under.. hope its nothing to serious?

normal 75W90 is NOT suitable

you have to use VAG oil - go to dealers / TPS with VIN and get the right stuff

Been having spine surgery on and off for the last ten years, today was just the latest installment.

Am going to get a friend to order some gear oil fro TPS tomorrow, as he has a trade account there. Don't suppose you know off hand the proper VW engine oil grade as well?, as I'm going to get them at the same time. I like to use OEM stuff if poss unless there is a proven good alternative, - have done this on all my other cars and it's always looked after me.

Thanks for the help

Phil

:wall:

Phil.. vw.501 approved oil goes in them. just ask the TPS guy and he will see you right. If your going to the medway branch Chris down there is shat hot. 4.5 ltrs i think (been to sleep since) about £25 from TPS. :)

The dealers usually put Quantum Synta Platinum engine oil in. You want 5w40 for fixed or 5w30 for variable servicing

Thanks guys.

think some people are getting confused with gear oil and engine oil

to clarify

for engine use a VW504/507 oil (you need 4.5l - so get a 5l bottle)

for gearbox use a G060 oil (give dealer VIN and they will give you the right stuff) you need 1.9l so get two 1 litre bottles
