Scouty scout upgrades/retrofit mods

Featured Replies

Afternoon,

I've had my 58 plate Scout for 2 months now and I am really glad I made the decision to get, however........ After spending just a morning in the new 61 plate Works Scout I was wondering about doing some retrofit mods to my Scout and just wanted some advice from others that have a tad more experience in this than me. The mods I had in mine were........

1). Replacing the Stream MP3 Head Unit with a Columbus Sat Nav Head Unit - I've gathered I would have to fit a GPS unit and also change a wire as I have a CD Changer in the boot of my 58 plate Scout - Is that correct and is it a fairly simple mod? Do I need to have it coded or is it plug n play?

2). Retrofitting the FL Climatronic Unit - I have the old Climiatronic Unit on my 58 plate - Is it just a pin move and resetting the new unit? On the topics I have found on the subject there was a query about changing the polarity on the climate compressor? There seemed to be no answer on that query........ Do I need to have it coded or is it plug n play?

3). Finally I'd like to retrofit Maxidot - I gather I have to match the unit - i.e a diesel to a diesel maxidot. Would it be compatible with the above retrofits? On my steering wheel I have all the stalks for cruise control and trip computers, etc. I gather I need to get the unit coded? Are there any independant garages in Devon/Cornwall that could do this or do I need to go to a dealer/stealer?

If anyone can help with this that would be appreciated.

Cheers

Gareth

I think you've covered the issue of fitting a Columbus, it should plug straight in and the pin swap is simple enough. If you buy of some of the established eBay sellers, they usually supply the GPS receiver and the code for the security. You may find it works straight away, but it may need coding. It's highly likely that it will need some coding if you fit it first and then add Maxidot as it may not display things properly.

If it was me I'd get the Maxidot sorted first, then the columbus, but thats more a preference thing! As you have said, you need the correct unit i.e. diesel or petrol. In early cars you had to get them done on the dealers VAS system and needed the code that came with the existing and new binnacles or the immobiliser wouldn't play nice! But i think it can now be done by those who know there way around the latest VCDS software.

Cant help with the Climatronic mod, but there was a good thread on here that seemed to suggest it was easy to do.

Hello and welcome to scout ownership.

I retrofitted a Columbus very soon after getting mine, bought of eBay and also sourced a gps unit off eBay and got a trim surround from local skoda dealer (Columbus is a slightly different shape to the srtream) all in cost me about £485 ish plugged it in and worked straight away, nav came up in maxidot ect. I have since gotten vcds and found a few things about my install:

Aerial - to get am reception as well as fm you need one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180662955007#ht_2337wt_1060

My cd changer wasn't working but on checking the pin didn't need changing, it just wasn't plugged in due to a previous phone kit installation. And the final fault was just because the car had been told it had a nav unit, still worked fine just through a fault.

Mine has factory maxidot which is great but I believe it can be retrofitted for around £300 ish?

To be honest I'm happy with the original climate.

Cheers for the info guys, so you think you can get maxidot retrofitted for £300 ish? Is that going through the dealers or an independent, including them sourcing the correct Maxidot unit?

Thanks for the link, interesting reading. Looking quickly on ebay I have found the following:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skoda-Octavia-Maxidot-Clocks-1ZO-920-942D-/290674136786?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43ad8756d2#ht_500wt_922

Thats the sort of thing I am looking? Thanks again for all the info Anddenton.

Looks good, should end up with it fitted under £200 at that price. Well worth it in my opinion, looks much better than the standard dash.

Well I've bought that maxidot unit. Just need to find a garage that will fit and code it. Anyone recommend anywhere in Devon/Cornwall?
