Restoring Paintwork

Featured Replies

Hi, so I've had my Octy vRS in Black Magic for 22 months, covered 56,000 miles and picked up all manner of tar spots, dead bugs, stone chips, scratches and swirl marks from the odd occasion I've used an automatic car wash. I've been using Turtle Wax Shampoo & Wax every couple of weeks, tried the Bug and Tar wipes from time to time, and I do polish the car occasionally with some crap I bought for

I think alot of people use the Swiss Oil Claybar !

Zymol removes the swirlies, but watch this space because I have a thought..........

I have a project VW Golf GTi which hasn't seen polish in years and I'm thinking about doing bit of private research on the subject.

For example, I have tried one well known polish on a small quarter panel and the results weren't too bad.

Tried the Zymol (Halfrauds

Stan, send me you address and I will send you a Swissol sample to include in the test.....might as well, eh!

Greg, to start off with you will need a claybar/paint rubber of some description, followed by a polish of somesort, then a wax to top it off.

Seeing that your car is Black Magic, I am fairly sure it will not be looking at it's best at the moment after using some of these products.

There are a number of products from Meguiars that you could think about, namely the Clay Kit, followed by the Stage-3 kit as well. This will give you fairly good results .

From the Swissol range, you would require a Paint Rubber, some cleaner fluid (medium I would guess), and some wax to seal it all in.

Hope the above might help.

John.

A group scrounge rather than a group buy

Can do a group buy rather than a group scrounge if you prefer........ ;)

Ta for the advice, but ... please can you wipe my ar5e for me too ... I think I need to get all the dead bugs, tar etc off before I do anything else, and then once I have got a good wax on that will show up the zillions of stone chips !

I guess I'm really looking for a miracle cure ! Like a respray, but MUCH cheaper.

;)

:) If you want the best results for you car without spending lots of money on bodyshops there is one make already mentioned Meguires, they are not fairly good they are the best bar none for the guy at home wanting a great looking car.

Why because there products only do one job the one its designed for,

thats why there range to the novice can be comfusing because there can be three products that say it removes crud or gives great shine but below is there best (for the perfectionist)

1/ for scratches and swirl marks Scratch X is the best. apply with spounge applictor 2-3 times for varying scratch types. unlike other similar products its paste breakes down to finer and finer granules on every stroke you do leaving smoother surface with no damage to surrounding area.

2/ Quick clay for removing rough textured paint eg from Tar, Tree sap, overspray

this product leaves paint as smooth as glass, apply it by breaking off small piece of clay spray it with mist spray (supplied) and spray affected area and rub the clay will turn very dirty so need it in and re use till piece is dirty then break off new bit, its as simple as that and the finish is second to none.

3/wax it either with Gold class or new Tech wax these give the most reflective finish you will ever see without machining.

Dont beleive?? Try it and see why nothing else quite meets there standards not even Zymol or Auto Glym.

Hope all this great advice has helped you and anyone else who requires nothing else but great first time results

I spent 4 hours yesterday doing a spring clean of the exterior, maybe a bit OTT on the wash side.

Sponge with warm clear water, Fresh sponge with Simoniz Teflon car wash, Chamois.

Then the hard bit, 2 coats of Simoniz Teflon Polish / Wax. ( from a previous group buy)

The results were unbelievable. I could see a rainbow when the sun shone on the bonnet, and the nearside door had a 3D reflection of the gatepost

I came out this evening around 6 after a bit of rain, & the drops were beig repelled by the polish. :)

Just need a claybar for the dead flies on the wing mirrors.

A Clay bar will do this for you, except wiping your ar5e, you will need a volunteer for that issue!

All the cleaning and waxing you will do to the car WILL show up the stone chips, especaillly as the manufacturers tend to use a light coloured base coat.

You won't get a cheap cure, other than a repsray or Chipsaway.

It's way too far gone for Chipsaway ... so although the chips will look hellish at least it would be nice and shiny.

The Meguires solution proposed by yellow taxi sounds ideal mate, especially the Quick Clay, I have loads of crud stuck to the car, especially the front bumper and around the wheel arches and I just can't shift it.
