Stero making battery go flat

Featured Replies

Anyone experienced this when the car is left for a few days it goes flat I disconnected the stero and it does go flat, is my head unit knackered or can this be something else?

Cheers paul

The battery goes flat, and when the stereo is disconnected the battery still goes flat? How can it be the stereo then?

Need to test charge rate, battery and check current drain to see what's going on.

Battery about to go belly up. Not charging. First places I'd be looking. Charge battery, then if it starts, take to a REPUTABLE place to check it out. Most will check charge voltage. And as you're in Northants-and unit 18 is not far away - sorted . Simples .

Sorry what an idiot disconnect the head unit and the battery doesn't go flat

Does it still have the Alpine in it?

Hi, I had exactly that in my fun. Leave the head unit on display overnight and a flat battery in the morning. I had suspected the battery and a check revealed unserviceable. Have just changed the battery but unit hasn't been left on since. Another strange problem it seems to have solved is the fact that previously when I popped a cd out it wouldn't then accept another one, sometimes taking loads of attempts to take the disc. No idea why? 40 quid on a new battery has made a hell of a difference all round.

Stop . There's a lot of folks not into electrics. And it looks like the answer . Dom't critise some one for not having the technical know how to diagnose a fault. I ciuld ask a lot of very technical queas tons which you'd find hard to answer .

If you read the post properly you'd see that I'm calling my self an idiot for a typing error

If its after market stereo have you got the din adapter. Although the stereo will run without it there are a couple of pins that on the standard stereo always have power on them but wont drain unless switched on.

On the after market stereos they do drain the battery if these pins are connected.

I had the same issue with a VW Touran and Alpine HU

My local VW dealer had it in overnight to do a full drain test and said they couldn't find anything significant, but after a few days the car wouldn't start - I ended up getting rid of the car because of it (the one blessing is that that is how I came to get my Octavia vRS)

Best bet is to find an ICE expert who can make sure it's wired up to use little or no power when the car's not running, but has sufficient to store any saved stations etc

(For the record, I realised that you were calling yourself an idiot :) )

The headunit has been fitted for around four years I'd guess, I fitted it.

Doesn't mean it doesn't have a fault though, is S contact still working? Does the headunit switch off when you pull the keys out?

I didn't realise that :(

It obviously was wired correctly if it lasted four years - mine was going flat every 4-5 days

It's not the one you put in bud i took it out my yellow one

Felix,

I had exactly the same on a pug 106 with a sendai CD player.

It had been in the car for about a year, all fine, and then one day car wouldn't start.

Flat battery.

Charged battery just like you and 2 days later car again wouldn't start.

Flat battery again!

I eventually traced the cause to the CD player and when disconnected all was fine.

It turned out that there was a fault inside the CD so when the car ignition was off, the CD was still live and draining the battery even though the display and player appeared to be off as usual.
