Automatic's - normal?

Featured Replies

Is it normal for the brake pedal on an auto to have little room between relaxed and standing the car on it's nose?

Have an auto for upto a week as a loan car and having a hard time getting to grips with braking as there doesnt seem much in it.

Have driven an auto before, but some time ago now. It's a Galaxy if that makes any odds.

Only when left foot braking :giggle:

Normal right foot driving feel manages ok.

LOL, this was right foot braking!

I am quite new to autos but can't say I have seen this in the, admittedly small cars, I have driven.

Fine for me and i've driven my fair share! Might just be rubbish brake feel.

Varies from car to car IME.

I've recently driven an auto Lexus is250 and you virtually had to put the brake pedal through the floor to get any response. BMW 330 auto I used to have had a much more responsive brake pedal.

Well, I'll have to see how I fair tomorrow. Either it'll be fine, or I'll stop so well I'll get rear ended.

Brakes are no different in a manual or auto besides you have engine braking on an auto if you have a dsg or similar and don't downchange on a manual when slowing.

Different cars, different brakes.

Often found the larger Ford cars to have very over servoed brakes.

Chris

I've never found it harsh with any of my cars, but when I had a Golf mk6 DSG for 2 weeks, by christ that had vicious brakes. Lightest tap, face in the dash. Got back into my Vauxhall, thought I'd bought a car with a failing brake system...so much more travel and effort needed, yet now feels perfectly normal again.

It was my only dislike with the Golf, to be fair. It didn't seem to have any "analogue" to it...brakes were either off, or "**** the bed". I ended up downshifting the DSG instead, it was more controllable!

Are you sure you're not declutching and putting the brakes on at the same time? ;)

Nothing to do with being an Auto. Newer cars do have Brake assist which gives the impression they are on or off, in other words over assisted. Have the same on/off brakes on the Toyota but I've gotten used to it now. The only problem is when I drive the Westy(with no servo) I sometimes panic when I give the brakes a dab of right foot-------nothing, then I remember I have to push a lot harder.

I think the Galaxy (Titanium X) is doing this.

At slow/parking speed it's really abrubt. When out on the motorway it's more like a manual, in that foot to the floor to stop at times.

Must be some feature ford think is a good idea?

You now know which car not to own in the future,

Cant stand the Galaxy, even in Titanium X spec.

I have however slipped easily into driving the auto, and might have to seriously consider a DSG next time round for our own car.

Meanwhile I can't wait to get the Sharan back, even though the garange say they cant find anything wrong with it! Seriously not impressed at all the agro. Bosses must be doing their nut!

Is it good practice to use N or P in long queues, at lights for example, or just use the footbrake?

Footbrake is fine as it usually releases the clutch when brake depressed and car at a standstill. It is however as with a manual, common courtesy to put in N or P and use the handbrake to prevent irritation to the person behind.
