Big wheels.... a joke?

Featured Replies

Hahaha what a stupid thread IMHO.

We all are grown ups and can make a decision on what we want from our cars and how we want them to look so why would you start a thread on 18's plus being pointless!? If your happy with your car the way it is then good for you, but you might aswell say that everyone should drive around in a brand less car that gets 5 people from A to B.

Il just keeping modding my car thanks and it will be just the way 'I like it' and that's the whole point of this forum. Opinions are welcome but can't see the point in starting an arguement over personal opinion. Rant over :)

I like big wheels and i cannot lie

U other brotherz can't deny

When a girl walks in with a itty, bitty, waist

And a round thing in ur face

Big wheels are purely for show. The tyre manufacturers love them, as they then get to charge an arm and a leg to replace tyres. The link to racing also comes in, as on a pancake smooth track where comfort isn't a factor they perform. As mentioned previously, this can also be due to the requirement to fit massive brakes. But my vRS has 18s on it - a McLaren F1 ran 17s. Just goes to show that size doesn't matter! :giggle:

Some great replies...

It was a discussion topic and not a rant!

Great to see the opinions and reasons

I was considering a similar topic on Panel filters... I wont bother lol!

Simple people like to be different and change the appearance of their cars, why not each to their own.

I for one are all for a nice bit of modding, lowering, rims, engine, suspension brakes etc etc.

My octy will be getting bigger rims and coilovers soon :bandit: And I for one will love it and not care about others thoughts

If people are going to argue "what's the point of 18" wheels", then what's the point of the rear and front spoiler, or the red brake callipers - spoilers won't do much at 70mph and I'm sure reversing would be easier without the rear one. (In fact does a rear spoiler do anything useful on a car with FRONT wheel drive?) I'm fairly convinced the 18s mainly serve to give a worse ride and a bigger bill when they need replacing. For that matter, what's the point of the vRS engine, 95% of the time it's of no benefit and ALL the time costs more money in fuel, insurance and tax. ;)

The point is undoubtedly to distinguish the vRS as far as possible from all the rather mundane Octavias in use as taxis and other business vehicles! I wouldn't drive any other Skoda.

It's personal preference but I think evryone knows that huge alloys are really just a cosmetic thing especially on the roads we have now.

They only time I really think it looks daft is on SUVs with 22" and ultralow profile tyres. An off roader that can no longer function as an offroader just doesn't make sense to me.

I've got 18" but only because they came with the car. I wouldn't have paid extra for them. Next car will not have massive alloys or sports suspension. I've done that now. Quiet and smooth next time.

Reasons for big wheels? Improved brake cooling, allows bigger tyre/footprint, smaller sidewall gives more response to steering input, more room for bigger brakes, aesthetics.

So what if the main driver for some is aesthetics? If we only ever chose things purely from a performance/ functionality point of view we'd be living in a very dull world.

Can you apply your rimmage methodology to your font size please :-)

I'm a fan of big rims, as long as it's tasteful and in proportion with the car. I say this with titchy tadger 17's on my Superb, but am looking for 18's (Calm yourself Bab's, no 19's :))

Exactly, we'd all be driving Skodas.
