Snapped Wiper Arm. Removal tips?

Featured Replies

Did something stupid, just wasn't concentrating enough when cleaning the car today, anyway, long story short, I opened up the bonnet while the wipers were up to give it a clean underneath and the wiper arm snapped. Got another one on order from the stealers but paid the price! £40 for a moment of stupidity, wont be doing that again in a hurry anyway....

I can see how it comes off, just remove the cap, whip off the bolt and it should slide off right?

This wiper arm doesn't want to go down without a fight, it seems to be jammed on, I suppose its been on for 7 years now so its probably going to be a little stiff, but it seems impossible to remove, so has anyone removed the wiper arm before and if so, any tips?

*been trying to leaver it off with a screwdriver but worried about damaging the plastic below

Thanks in advance for any help!

£40 ?! Go to your local scrappy and you'd pay all of a fiver. You need a 'puller' that grips the outer arm section and pushes against the central splined section that the arm fits round, you then tighten the puller and it lifts the wiper arm free.

Cheers Avalon, yeah thought about going scrappy, but I would have the same problem of not being able to remove the arm! :p

Any idea where the best place to get a "puller" at all?

About £10-12 from your local motor factor or a half decent tool shop (Machine Mart for example sell them), about the same on ebay etc as you'll have a 3 days wait for the dealer to sort you out with a wiper arm. It's the kind of thing you'll hardly ever use (hopefully) so not worth spending lots on.

WD40 and a bit of persuasion!

Thanks for the info guys, just been looking on machine marts website, there's a whole world of wiper pulling set, never knew things like that existed. Some in excess of £100! :o

Anyway, I left it to soak in WD40 for most of the day and just went outside and tried again, with a big hammer (solves anything!) put the nut back on, and gave it a few gentle taps while levering what was left of the arm up from the bottom and it came off!

Thanks again for you help guys

This sometimes works, but I sometimes think I should invest in one of these pullers, as also good for rear wiper too.

I think the main problem is that its surrounded by plastic which isn't the strongest so didn't really want to put too much pressure on it just in case, but it seemed to work ok in the end

This tool looks like it could do the job as its adjustable:-

Obviously no way is it as good as the proper set though:-

Sometime in the future might look at getting the universal puller as the other, unbroken arms are starting to look a little worse for wear in some places :/

Use to own 1, best to nip down your local windscreen place! I'll check my old tools tomorrow but I doubt I have it anymore!

If it's broken already just give it a good tug and and push.

I bought a puller after I wanted to do the polo wiper arm mod and couldn't

get the rear arm off whatever I tried to do.

Just a note for anyone wanting to pull the rear arm off.

Pull the plastic washer jet out of the centre first or the puller will crush it.

The replacement jet was £6 from Skoda for a tiny tiny piece of plastic.

As you may have guessed I knackered mine :D
