Downpipe and sports cat ....how come ?

Featured Replies

Maybe i am a bit off-hinged , but I find the prices for Downpipes and 200 cell sports cat combo for the Skoda octavia vrs 2.0 and the Golf mk5 gti TFSI engines don't really add up.

For example , a decat downpipe can be had for around £140 up to £330 , then 200 cell sports cats can be had from around £100 to £140 ... all are stainless steel and 3" pipe work. These are all in shop prices. So how come the cheapest downpipe and 200 cell cat is around £550 and upwards? Or am i missing something.

Why do most of the downpipe and 200 cell cat versions had the cat welded onto the downpipe when the cat is a serviceable item ( meaning that they can fail and will eventually need replacing).

From my basic calculations, the downpipe and sports cat combo should range from £250 - £450 max. ( these include the profits as the costs are calculated using shop prices ). The downpipe/sports cat combo had been around since 2008 ....how come in 2012 we are still being charged such a high price for basically a 4 year old ( and not too complex) design. While i understand profits are to made, don't manufactures realise as it's one of the most effective exhaust changes that can be made to the vag 2.0 tfsi engines , at the lower prices , they would sell like hot cakes on a cold day.

Now back in 2008 i bought a downpipe and 200 cell cat for my nissan skyline r33 gts-t all in t304 stainless steel and quite substantial in size for £300 from Australia including postage an packing. Since then uk companies are producing the same thing a few years later for almost a a third less. What gives?? Can anyone give me a better reason than " because they can " ? :wonder:

Totally agree mate and been thinking exactly the same thing myself! Its not as if there isnt demand for them either with the same downpipe (within reason) fitting the leon, golf and octavia (not sure on the A3) so why such crazy prices. I know companies will say they have to develop and test these, but as you say these engines have been around for long enough now to have made you money back on development and its not rocket science is it!

Ive been reading peoples reviews on the £150 ebay jobs on some american forums and havent heard any real issues and so many good comments on build quality and performance so was thinking of buying one and a 200 cell cat separately and getting an exhaust place to weld it up.

The best offer on a ready done option at the mo is John Ashley on ebay at £385 delivered. I refuse to pay £600 for something that is simply not worth it!

That's a good call - thanks for that :)

Anyone want to be the guinea pig on one of these jobbies and let us know how the fit is?

I bought a used Milltek DP from someone with an S3, so thats whats on mine, fitted perfect!

Was hoping to get any the companies to give a response , but not too surprised that we have not had any. It's a real shame. I was in VW scene many years ago with 16v mk2 golf and a later vw bbr engined corrado and found for some reason ,most vag suppliers just see £ signs when they see vag folk. Don't get me wrong it happens to many different marks so the vag is really not too different , but in this current time i hoped things had changed. :wall:

No worries fella it seems the best quality for the price and would save the messing about if u wanted a cat welded in. Which one u after a guinea pig on the £385 or the eBay £150 jobbie? I'm really tempted to just get the decat but my head says to wait and save the hassle of having to swap out MOT time and just get the sports cat first is last.

I wouldn't bother with a de-cat - although the gains would be good I would not want to have the hassle of swapping back for MOTs.

I'd be interested in the £385 John Ashley pipe, just fit and forget..

Yea have to agree mate and so better stop spending my money on stupid things and get saved for the pipe and then will be paying shark a visit for a stage 2 (that is unless i see a cracking deal in one of the summer shows and it will be done there. Wonder if Shark will be doing any discount remaps at any VAG shows this summer, hint hint ;)?) .

Does a vw Golf gti mk5 downpipe fit on the octavia vrs ?

Yes it should fit if it's off the 2.0tfsi.

Thanks!

From what i have read and the advice i have been given , they are two main restrictors of flow the pre cat , but the main cat seems to be the biggest , but rather then mess about , i think i will get a decat down pipe and add a 200 cell cat , a local exhaust shop will do the work for me , as i have a realatively unused 200 cell 3" cat from my skyline ( used to just fit it for mot ). Hopefully it will all work well , as the sports cat has flanges should be a bolt on affair with replacements not being a problem if needed.

thanks for that sounds a sensible arrangement cheers

After some research decided to put my money where my mouth is , and bought a stainless steel decat pipe from Ebay ( Toyosports ) and used my old ( but relatively unused ) 200 cell cat from my Skyline R33 GTS-T. Got it all fitted today , and yes it works fine. Also got some heatwrap ( new lava crushed rock type ) ... Yeah i know sounds a bit chessy , but seems to do the job very well.

Total cost to me , £259. Now previously i wondered why it was so expensive , it was explained the to bend 3" t304 stainless steel is very difficult and expensive without causing ripples at the bends. So the downpipe would be lots of specfic 3" bends all welded and smoothed done by local exhaust specialist with the labour is what would make the cost high. To prove a point the place that did my downpipe said it would have cost £500+vat to it from scratch. Yikes.

My car is standard ( no map ) and with a pipercross Venom ...nothing else ( yet ). First impressions , it spools up a lot quicker than before and feels quicker in 3rd and 4th , no need to really change gear at normal speeds. It feels like there is more torque. Funny enough it sounds quieter than before , but it's early days yet.

Could not be happier with the results, it took around 2 hours to modify and fit. Big Thanks to Roy at STS tyres in Bromley, knows his exhausts... even runs an Audi S4 himself. While I was there even got the air in my tyres replaced with Nitrogen at £2 and tyre why not? Will see how if the claims are true.

Doing the maths , stainless steel vw mk5 gti decat downpipe = £139 - £149 + 200 Cell sports cat £97- £150 + fitting at STS £120 = £356 to £419 for a downpipe and sports cat that most places seems to sell for around £500 - £660 , just for the downpipe and cat alone. Can't be bad.

I know there will be some nay sayers about quality and longevity ,also about not using well known names etc etc. They might be true as only time will tell , but companies like Turbo revs ( downpipe ) , have a faily good rep , Magnaflow ( sports cat ) are well respected in the USA and anyone who watches either overhaullin , custom my ride ( the later series ) , wrecks to riches ( usa) and even American Hot rod on sky will know the name magnaflow. So I am faily confident of the longevity and as pleased as punch. Hopefully more people will start along their own road and we can stop being charged stupid prices for tuning equipment. Don't forget every part bought already had their profit margin built in as i'm not a trader or anything , no special offers or discounts.

Excuse some of the pics , there were from my phone

Brilliant job there. And a huge saving made. How much do you think it cost for them to supply and fit a cat to a fitted decat pipe?

Well STS use powerflow stuff , their parts have had good and bad reviews. From my first talk , their 200 cell cat was £151 and if you supply the decat downpipe it's £120 to fit everything. Would advise getting the heat wrap ( use either titantium or the lava flow stuff ) as it saves painting the white stuff. Been there before , it a real pain and time consuming. You could save yourself £50 by getting a magnaflow one. The lenght of the cat had to be no more than 12 inches long. If you want to be practical get flanges done for an easy change later or even a decat pipe for those track days. Hope this helps , good hunting.
