Got this networking malarky sussed

Featured Replies

Who am I trying to kid - ****** have I.

One success I've had is I've FINALLY got two PCs talking to my router, and both are now folding away like there's no tomorrow. AND tonight I figured out how to make my spare D: drive on my older, now semi retired, PC shareable to my new machine with a password.

(oddly enough was under "sharing" on a right click menu option... :o)

So, now I can move all my files from one PC to another without resorting to CD-Rs like I feared.

:) - I love this new machine, not the quickest ever, but its crunched through 735 parts of a 2500 WU in about 15 hours.

Oh, and thanks to the above chappie too who spent some time on MSN's "remote assistance" having a rummage through my router settings and other bits too. Never seen how that remote assist works - Its a bit clever! :)

Ironic really all it took was a "restore factory defaults" button to cure the whole miscommunication issue. :D

No probs Jason...only too happy to help...or try to at least :D

Did you have to setup a login password on win98 to get the sharing working?

Not to login to windows itself - I had to right click on my D: drive and there was a sharing option, so I clicked it, allowed sharing - It asked me for an ID for the network and a pssword for accessing it, so I did this - It appeared in my network places on the Xp machine within 2 seconds and I was straight in (after putting the password in) - Also works over the wireless which I tested, but didn't give mate the password.

...but didn't give mate the password.

Can't fault you there mate. :)

Just found the article again that mentioned creating a login. After re-reading it, it is only needed to go the other way. If for instance you wanted to access a folder on your xp machine from the win98 machine, you would have to create a login on the 98 machine that matched a user on the xp machine.

Sorry for the misinformation in the PM...that'll teach me to read stuff properly first time round :D

Cheers

That issue should never arise, as the win98 machine is now enjoying an easy retirement - Been uninstalling various programs off it tonight. MSN among others have all gone now. Not sure what else I can remove - I think AVG should remain. Might get rid of some other utilities though. :)

Still wondering how else to allow the folding to work quicker...

I would keep AVG on but change it so it doesn't do the daily scan perhaps as that will take a fair bit of CPU.

For the rest, disable the screen saver - you can always have power saving enabled to turn your monitor off.

W98 doesn't have that much stuff trashing CPU generally.

On W2K/XP you have the indexing service hogging CPU at regular intervals, I tend to just disable that :)
