Driving in Europe-taping headlights

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been answered before-couldn't find it.

On the New Octavia where does one stick the odd bits of black insulating tape for driving on the Continent ?

Thanks

Phone Skoda customer services and they should email you a template. Or buy the skoda headlamp converters from your dealer.

Have seen how much the headlamp coverters are

You should be able to switch the beams over inside the headlight unit. You can generally with this type of lenses. The manual won't even tell you how to change the bulbs though.

Yeah, I know how much they are I've got them for my Fabia

All of that is correct, but for Xenon headlamps only. There is no switch in the std headlamps.

Strange, they use the same elypsoid lenses that i've always been able to switch over in previous cars.

Not sure about that as the new Octy uses projector headlamps, these may well have the lever in the back of them aswell.

It is all a little annoying this headlight switching.

First I get told you shouldn't do this yourself.

Then I find you can buy clip-on headlight protectors on which you can stick the converter(s) themselves.

My dealer is now telling me they'll show me how to do it myself (thanks ;)) -

I'm confused - for the Furby vRS with Xenons, can you or can't you buy clip-on protectors with continental-driving convertors?

The ETKA shows the xenon lights with the headlamp converters as an extra. The switch for them is a pain to get to so it would probably be best to buy them.

Thanks Jeff :) You've got PM back ;)

Hi I have the new Ambience estate with Xenon lights where abouts is this switch on the headlamps

not sure on the New Octavia, but on the Superb iirc, you can see them and on the Fabia, you have to take apart the back of the headlamp as if you were changing a bulb and it's behing the cover.

How much are the clip-on headlamp converters? I'm off to the continent next week to put some Km's on my Octy 2 (and to celebrate the wife's birthday!)

around

I found this site, don't know if the universal converters will work with independent dip and main beam bulbs.

Spoke to Signam. Not suitable for the new Ocky.

Where About was the switch on the Elypsoid lenses

On my old A6 is was in the back of the unit. Take the cover off and it's a lever that moves horizontally.

We regularly visit France and Belgium so headlight conversion was a real problem on my LK estate because of the clear lenses. I phoned Skoda technical services and was advised it was possible to convert using a switch behind the lamp units. Off to my local dealer...no problem...but we have to remove the lamp transformer units first...30 minutes labour ...and that will be

I've just come back from a long wekend in and around Calais.

On previous visits, I've been very careful to tape up my lights (somewhere - if I can ever find them again - I have the templates for a couple of cardboard jigs, shaped to fit the headlamps, with cutouts for the masks). However, after a very unscientific survey (basically, looking at the cars in the ferry queues) on the last trip, I didn't bother this time. I just wound down the headlamp adjuster instead. No problems, even when I encountered a Police road block - they were breathalysing all and sundry (including me; I passed :) ).

@KLB - won't work with Xeons as they are auto-levelling ;)

Got the converters though :D

My dealer was prepared to show me how to do it for free, but I must admit based on how tight it is behind those lights ;)

I posed the question of headlamp converters to my dealer a couple of weks ago. Silence!

Has anyone had a definitve answer?

My dealer suggested that I bought a set of Halfords converters.

Have done so and they will work with almost any car. The instructions include an index, by make / model, to a set of very detailed diagrams.

Ocky 2 not listed so e-mailed the manufacturer. This is the response:-

If the adaptors you have purchased are a roundell shape with a tail then please follow diagram 8.

The converters can also be bought on line from
