Sat Nav Upgrade, easy as swapping the HU out

Featured Replies

Hi, so before I go making decisions is it as easy to replace the factory HU on a 56 plate vRS with a second hand MFD2 unit off ebay, do I need anything else?

Need the answer soon as im talking a guy down in price

Very easy to change but beware of battery drain, hopefully someone will be along soon to give a definitive answer on whether this was a problem with the mfd2 but you might end up needing an updated can gateway.

I swapped mine over from stream to MFD2 after buying Hedge's old unit, back in 2008. Always worked well for me, but did need a pin or two swapped over for the aux in port to work. Handy link to Stu's website is very useful. Can't post the link ATM as on iPad. I replaced my battery at Christmas time, but it was the original and 5 years old and does more short journeys than I'd like so is more of a drain on it than the HU probably is.

But yes pull of facia, undo the screws, pull out original HU, connect up new HU, replace screws and refit the correct facia which you will need too as it is different. Enter code and enjoy. So yes is a pretty easy job.

Good topic as my columbus is on its way and I have my new fascia from dealers €84!!!!!! can't wait to get it in and switched on.

MFD3 which is a columbus right

Also worked out that link is only for reverse camera, NM

Also how do I upgrade my can gateway whatever it is, software or hardware please

So the cheapest OEM way to get Sat nav is to go with a MFD2 or Nexus apparently but you say they are poor maps etc, are they up to date? Im coming from a 2006 Honda civic Sat Nav so I expect similiar maps and complexity of OS

Great info Mike thanks for the help, to be honest I dont have the money and I dont see my self coming across that amount of money to upgrade something that works OK, although it does sound way better. Got alist the size of my arm of things to do to the house before the car.

But got me thinking about getting a Bolero and using my current Garmin if and when I need sat nav which isnt often really. It was either buy a 07 vRS with 42K on the clock with sat nav and no cruise control or a 56 with 24k on the clock with CC and no Sat nav but all the other options ticked. Not yet got it, paying deposit on Monday.

Its got a Nexus but it has scuffed up alloys, an unknown remap and is more expensive than the one without sat nav, I am still a little torn between them but thanks for your help

The MFD2 Nexus will never need an upgraded CAN gateway. I had one in my 54 plate with no problems at all. The upgraded gateway is only needed with an MFD3 Columbus with later firmware.

You'll find the mapping on the MFD2 is very, very basic and not user friendly at all. After something like a Tom Tom or Garmin, it's like stepping back to the Stone Age.

Either keep the head unit you've got, and spend £150 on a good standalone sat nav with new mapping (something you can't get for the MFD2), or save up and get a Columbus.

Mike

Nice one Mike, I new the batt drain was an issue with MFD3 and had assumed it would be the same with the 2.

I went Columbus (was lucky as I did this before finding this forum so did it blind) and I can agree it is a fantastic unit, so much so I didn't notice cd changer was disconnected for 18 months.
