Oil changes

Featured Replies

As far as i understand the Fabia has an oil change every 10k miles. From experience most other new cars usually have an oil change after the first 1000 miles which makes sense because you end up with the worn bits off the engine in the oil when its running in. Is this not the case with the Fabia? Could i get the dealer to do an oil change after the first 1000?

You can do but to be honest with the materials used in building engines these days and the way they are put together id say 99.9% of brands now dont bother with changing the oil at 1000 miles. Also I think oil has got alot better which has a bearing on it.

edit

Do not change your first oil before 5000 miles!! Thats what the manual says and there is a reason for that. tdiclub.com also insist on this.

It's absolutely necessary to keep the oil in a PD engine (and other VAG engines, I assume), as the oil 'ageing' helps the piston rings etc. to bed in. You used to have to change the oil reall early on an old engine while it was running in, because you'd get bits of swarf floating around the oil system. But as was pointed out, the better engine materials and tolerances these days, plus better oils and filters mean that there isn't as much of a problem with nasty bits floating round, and any nasty bits that do come off are kept out of anywhere vulnerable.

As said above, DO NOT change your oil before 5k!!!

Whilst the Fabia vRS has an oil change interval of 10,000 miles, the PD-engined Octavia with essentially the same engine has an oil change interval of up to 30,000 miles - albeit on a different spec fully synthetic oil. BTW, which new cars need an oil change after 1000 miles?

Maybe your think of some cars 1000 mile check, not oil change. Some like Peugeot & citroen have a checky up within the first 1000 miles. Main because they are rubbish and go wrong alot...............not that I have either peugeot or citroen issue!

I know Subaru do, but that's because they use a thinner oil for the running-in period..... :D

Yes same with our Ford Focus which had thin oil in for first 1000 miles also some of the Peugeot 405's we had also had a change at 1000 miles.
