Fuel economy on first tank

Featured Replies

So 11 days into ownership of the 170 4x4 diesel it's time to go and refuel. Range showing on the display at 20 miles.

So far I thought I'd been doing quite well, with the maxi-dot showing an average economy of 51.7mpg under the figure 2 and I seemed to be getting between 50 and 55 mpg on each trip.

So I filled up to do a brim-to-brim calculation on how it had gone over the first tank.

556.3 miles and 54.23 litres. Which I made 46.6mpg.

Still quite impressive for it's first tank on a new engine, but not exactly 51.7mpg!

I wonder if it'l be like my Greenline Fabia?

That got more accurate as the engine loosened up and the mpg increased, so it roughly made the maxi-dot figures.

My Maxidot over reads by about 12%. Looks good but nowhere near correct!

Assuming 10% overreading... 51.7 - 5.2 = 46.5 ... pretty close to what you really achieved!

Filled up on Sunday after completing 300 miles.

Maxidot reading 51.1mpg calculated as 48.2mpg

Not to bothered as a lot of the 300 miles where the delivery so no idea what speeds she was driven at, and Saturday saw a lot of stop start traffic in Liverpool. The Start start system worked perfectly every time.

Nice tight engine so will expect this to loosen up over the next week or so as i cover a fair few motorway miles.

Wow, thats pretty good. I didn't get that sort of consumption. I think my fig2 is showing 44.2mpg over 2500 odd miles at present.

I suppose its all down to routes etc, mine tend to be short 12 mile journeys, stop/ starting and a cold starts.

The maxidot overeading is normal Richard over almost 19,000 miles mine has not got any more accurate, which is why I had mine adjusted. My maxidot was over reading by more than 10%, so my figures are about right, now I have had them corrected using VCDS.

To be honest, I think that mpg is pretty good.

Yesterday I drove from outside Wallingford to Uffington briskly, and then gently back home, a distance of about 110 miles, and managed to average over 50mpg, I used the A34/M4M25 round to Godstone and back home up the A22 to Warlingham, which involves quite a few long gradients and a couple of steep hills. But, I did keep the speed down to 60ish.

Quite impressive for the DSG, but very few stop starts for that journey. but the 25 miles to Uffington it averaged mid 30's, as I was having fun, so the rest of the journey improved the overall average considerably.

Looks like the trip computer in my petrol Yeti is also optimistic by the same 10-12% (though I've got an alphanumeric, not a maxidot display installed in the dashboard).
