Steering Rack Question - TDi Octy Estate

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've noticed that my Tdi estate is pulling slightly to the left when on off camber roads - like motorways.

I initially thought it might be tyre pressures, but the garage has just told me that there is play on the drivers side of the steering rack (not track rod ends or the like - its the rack itself). He reckons that nothing catastrophic will happen, and I could just live with it since the car is pretty old.

Trouble is that I don't like things being wrong and do a lot of miles on the motorway so I'm not going to ignore it. - so the question is, can this be repaired, or are we talking about a new/replacement rack?

Thanks

I McL

If the rack has play, there is probably not much that can be done (in the way of a diy fix), you can get racks refurbed, but considering the cost of new and even cheaper secondhand racks its not really worth it. I have seen new (probably refurbed) racks on ebay, and secondhand racks come up on the forums quite a bit as well as on ebay, so dont worry, its not a really expensive part to get.

I have a very slight play in the passenger side of my rack, but it is something and nothing and been like that since i got car, was leaving it until i found a quick rack off a r32 or the like

The garage had another look at it and decided that the 'inner' joint at the end of the steering arm was at fault - they replaced it and now the car runs as straight as an arrow again.

Result.
