How do dealer treat trade in values for long waits?

Featured Replies

We are looking to re-order in the next few months with a Yeti 1.2 DSG SE trade in.

In the past a wait for the new car has been short/non existant so always been given a trade in value at order time. With a likely 6 month wait (may up-grade to Elegance but otherwise same again) can you expect the dealer to offer a trade in value at order time?

If not you are taking a bit of a gamble on the real price of changeover

and maybe locked in to an uncompetitive deal if they are only prepared to value your trade in at delivery time. As you are locked in they maybe

tempted to offer a lower than normal value due to this fact (they've got you by the short and curly's so to speak.

I can understand they would be taking a bit of a gamble too. With certain conditions met(mileage, no deterioration in condition/accident damage surely they could give you a pretty firm reliable offer?

Any advice based on personal experiences appreciated.

On the 1st March we traded in a 1.2 DSG SE to Preston Motors. (forum sponsor)

They fixed a part-ex price six months in advance, knowing that they would not be getting it until the 1st March.

Transaction was smooth and they paid the amount they quoted six months prior for the vehicle.

The vehicle had 4,500 miles on the clock at one year and we were asked not to exceed 10,000 miles.

When it went in at 18 months old it had 5,600 on the clock. So we did as requested.

When I order my Yeti I was told to expect a 6 month wait. The dealer priced my part exchange on an estimate of its value at the time the Yeti was due.

To my surprise the Yeti arrived in just under 10 weeks, the dealer adjusted the part exchange price and gave me an extra £1000 in part exchange.

1.2 TSi's , even in DSG format, are coming through much quicker now. I ordered mine on Jan 5th and will pick it up March 15th. It would have been quicker but sat at Grimsby dock for 10 days waiting for a transporter due to "12" rush.

For a trade in of our golf against a yeti they offered us £400 when the car was valued in parker at over 2000 so they are not that great at offering amazing trade in prices

From reading a few posts on this subject it seems to be dealer specific. In my case I was given a value for a 16 week wait (which I was told would actually be more than the quoted amount). After a 22 week wait I was given a much lower figure. In fact the depreciation (per week) between weeks 16 and 22 was double that given up to week 16.

I would say make sure whatever deal you agree is in writing and has contingencies for longer/shorter delivery times.

Went to my local dealer to order a new Yeti last month, and was offered £20.5k for my Elegance 170 tdi 4x4 at 2yrs old and 24k on the clock against a new one, Elegance 140 4x4 in candy white with gobi leather. Only problem was they quoted me 6 months wait, but stipulated that I'd get Glass's price plus £1k when trading in in September and they put it in writing. The salesman said that he couldn't see the price dropping much as they can't get the second hand ones never mind new ones and they are holding their value. All the other extras that were on offer would be honoured which was 3 years free servicing, and a free ipad, so we'll see in September.

When I ordered my Yeti last May my dealer agreed a minimum trade in value for my Octavia vRS. They stated that this was a minimum value and in the end come March gave me a little more for it as it had done less miles than anticipated. I would not have ordered a car unless I knew what the max possible price to change was going to be ... my dealer says they have become quite skilled in estimating values many months in the future since they now have to do it so often!
