Back on topic then...

Took it down to the dealer to get it checked out and it turns out that this 'gasket' was the turbo shim fix which, happily, has also fixed the niggle with it being slow to pick up revs again when slowing down for roundabouts.

  • Yes and here is the pic, you will notice the new shiny distance ring

The details are on the side of the compressor housing on a flat surface, you need a mirror to see them as its underneath. I think if you have J K or L your ok, before that needs the rework but as always check with your dealer who can advise.

The G point of my car :rain:

DSC_3532-1.jpg

Irfan, your G point is the same as my G point. But I'm afraid that turbine's suffix as Tech1e wrote is H. Oh yes I used a mirror. Yet my dealer told me that my car is not in the range of the service bulletin, but he also told me that he will know for sure when I will drive the car over there for the next service. That is about 25 days from now.

I am still confused, this weird van (Ok mine is a Roomster but has the same engine) works perfectly, does not consume too much petrol, just a bit of oil and has an unbelievable feeling when enters turbo mode at ~1700rpm.

All the above seems to go away as soon as the ECU update is installed. That is another fear of mine. I don't want it, I have some friends that had their cars updated and now they are complaining for entering turbo mode at ~2000rpm, the car is far more polite than before, they have lost their excitement and seems to have about 1 to 1.5 lt/100km higher consumption than before.

It is like you ordered and paid for a nice juicy sausage but then it turned to be made of soy. Unfair.

The turbo works perfectly too, so far.

There is only a noisy cold start, but the reason is the tension bearing/spring of the timing chain. The dealar said it was a 5 min job to change it. The item price is 28 Euro. I get this done next week.

I'll take pictures and add it next week.

My colleague suffered from the same issue, he got back and get the previous software back (in Turkey, dealers store the previous software for one year)

Well, my dealer told me that this is not possible. I really don't understand their policy. :wall:

This sounds similar to why I sold my Jeep 2.8 CRD Auto. From new it was a torque monster and in 2WD mode would spin up the rear tyres and surge forward in gears. Then the USA started to have warranty issues with the torque converter lockup clutches and hydraulic pump.

What did they do? Slight mods to gearbox but the altered the engine and gearbox software, as soon as you reached three quarter throttle the box would change down and lift the revs clear of the maximum torque zone. It meant you could not longer use maximum torque. They also lifted the lockup points so the gearbox wouldn't lockout the torque convertor until high speed and would release it you floored the pedal and fuel economy suffered.

This turned the torque monster into a weak, revey, frustrating mess and you couldn't get it removed either. Just have a look for Jeep Liberty or Cherokee CRD F37 Recall.

If something like that happens to the TSI then it will be following my Passat into the nice workshops of Shark Performance.

Cheers

I just found a video about the wastegate actuator fix.

Sadly the video seems not to be available any more...

It showed that the fix was a very simple procedure which lasted less than a minute !

We check the part number of the turbo, if it's before a certain suffix a shim is fitted and an ECU update carried out (along with some basic settings)

The update is needed as the settings of the actuator is altered by the shim.

Mine has a G suffix as far as I can tell. Using a mirror looking on the side of the compressor housing under where its says 'Made in Germany' there is a big number starting with b/n then ending in 'G'

I keep getting the occasional 'engine fault' 'workshop' warning on the maxidot plus the epc warning light when starting from cold which disappears if I stop and restart the engine. I've rang the dealer and he said that unless it did it when they started it up they would not detect a fault code. So I have not bothered but having now read about this turbo shim mod, perhaps this is what I need doing.

Don't want to lose the low down boost though that our Turkish/Greek friends has mentioned. Is this a feature of the mod and ecu update?

Regards, Pete

As a solution against noisy cold start, we have changed the timing chain tensioner and success :)

The noise was coming at the first seconds of ignition, dealer said the easiest and cheapest way is to start/change the tensioner. It was a 2 minutes job.

This part is changed

Irfan may I ask you if you have the ECU update applied to your car ? If so, have you noticed any difference?

No ECU update, everything is fine so far.

Only the noisy cold start was bothering me, which was a chain noise, now it is fixed.

You need to contact the dealer and ask them if your car has a recall. The ECU updates contents are not divulged to us but as fr as I know the shim corrects an issue with the adjustment of the wastegate actuator. The ECU changes the adaptation figures of the wastegate.

The recall is identified as 24W6. In Romania it was applied to both Octavia and Fabia with 1.2TSI 86 and 105 engines, on MY2010 -> MY2012.

The ECU was not upgraded, but only the settings were adjusted for the shim.

Well I can only speak for the UK but 24W6 includes an ECU software check/update. You then have to delete learned values and adapt the actuator, it's also a good idea to reset the throttle body although this isn't noted on the recall paperwork but I've found the idle bounces to start with if you don't.

Thanks for this post; occasionally get timing chain buzz on cold start with our August 2010 built 1.2TSI 85. Will ask the dealer about this on next service. Mind their technical know how is about zero, so we will more than likely get the usual blank looks (took them 7 visits to eventually fix an issue with our Yeti, despite another dealer having already diagnosed the problem and part needed) :S

I'm still testing the car for the chain buzz on cold start and it has gone for sure ;)

When the noise is still there, next step is replacing the timing chain and pallettes. This service action is already a recall --> 15D9

AARRRRGGHH !!!

This threat makes me sick.

A recall, then a campaign then again a recall, no info from dealers.... I wish there was a way to prompt my VIN and be sure for my vehicle. I called three times to them I got three different answers. AAARRRRGHHH !! (again)

Hello Skoda, It's easy to create an automated information system about these things. You know, Vin, Licence Plate, VAT Num or Invoice Num or what ever you can think. Then an automated e-mail on request would be fine. As we say ... Online Databases?

Just send an e-mail to Skoda CZ with your questions, VIN etc. ;)

I did it in the past. 3 out of 4 were Dear sir......... Feel free to contact with our importer.

Ok contacted my dealer in Mansfield and they confirmed my car is part of the recall. Apparently you should get a letter but they are doing them in batches and had not got around to me yet.

Interestingly, as someone has already posted on here, that it cures the delay in pickup when coming on and off the throttle when slowing down for roundabout etc. So what we thought was a DSG problem turns out to be turbo lag?

Also asked about the DSG update but did not know anything about that, so told him I'd been on Briskoda and had the TPI number for this so they said bring it with me and they will try and do this at the same time. I am suffering with some fierce clutch take offs that make me look like a learner driver sometimes which I hope will be sorted with this update + I've had some kangarooing which feels like the box has selected 5th instead of 3rd.

What are my chances of getting this sorted in one visit????

Will have to ring Rainworth myself Pete, we haven't received anything for our TSi DSG either.

Well I contact an other dealer than the one I bought the car from. The new one told me that it is obligatory to apply the ECU update and then to install the shim and then re - adjust the settings concerning shimming.

I'm going slightly mad...

Skoda Turkey recalls TSIs in batches. No call for me yet, but I've booked for a check-up on Thursday, the service station of main distributor of Skoda will check the car for all service recalls :)
