Front end feel issues (Any help really appreciated)

Featured Replies

Perhaps the Dogbone mount nut is lose? or the mount was a poor none OEM one?

I have seen very strange handling with a worn dogbone mount. Changed mine for a poly one.

I think I have spot the problem... change the front subframe bushes,are cheap (10p/pair from Lemforeder)....my car is 2001 also,and I just change them 2 days ago with more hard ones from Leon Cupra....handling improved so much!

Very few people are thinking think about these bushes,they are very important....the whole subframe is suported by these two

Your car is old as mine,but your engine has more torque and weight, the whole subframe is stressed more

10p / per eh?? where from

These are £14 each on the Octy. And if you change them for the Leon Cupra R(none "R" is the same as Octy) they are almost 4 times the cost and there are 4 of them as the TT,S3,LCR uses separate bush for top and bottom of each side.

Plus not a easy job to replace as you need to get Subframe off to get at the original bushes.

10 pounds/pair made by Lemforeder ,here in Romania. 9.3pounds exactly or 50RON (local currency)

Those from Leon Cupra are in 1 piece,are the same as the octy only the rubber is much much harder,looks like poliuretane.

I manage to change those without taking off the subframe(I'll explain if anyone is interested).Was quite hard,I was helped by my friend wich is engineer and owns a shop

Please share lol

We took of 3 of the 4 bolts....left the whole subframe conected on the chasis in 1 bolt,and that one was let loose.

Then we took of all 4 bolts wich connect the steering cassete on the subframe,and the subframe was dropped about 20cm from the chasis,but still connected on the car,and the cassete still connected on the rods and rack,just the bolts were off

The idea is to create enough space

We slowly destroyed the old bushes with a very sharp screwdriver,my friend refused to drill them to avoid scratching the inner surface.

Then with a press we put the new bushes.

Sorry for my english

Ok can see how you did that. :thumbup:

I did same for replacing ARB and bushes.

Mind you, I could not get 20cm clearance. Did you remove the pinch bolt to steering column from rack as you must of been straining that big time?

Also still not convinced you have any different bush to Skoda one if it is a one piece press bush. The one piece bushes is std across all the VW, Seat , Skoda range.

P/N 1J0199429

The only stiffer bushes are from Golf R32, Leon Cupra R, Audi TT and S3 being a 2 piece bush.

Those have a upper and lower part number

Upper = 8N0199282C

Lower = 8N0199282D

these do not need pressing in and insert from top and bottom.

Maybe you have a newer bushes that has slightly revised inner material to older version or you have a none std performance bush?.

Anyway if if works for you good job. I am going to attempt this soon as the only bushes I have not replaced.

No,that was untouched

Those are aftermarket bushes that I bought,not OEM.Maybe I'm wrong but the rubber on the new bushes is miles harder than the old ones from the car.I know the 2 piece sandwich style bushes,are quite expesive,and from the begining I was not interested .

Suggest you call VW or Audi or even TPS

Upper = 8N0199282C x 2

Lower = 8N0199282D x 2

Yeah I know buddy. I just ordered these at £22 each (need 4) as even TPS did not save much as these are only a Audi dealer part

I have these and very happy.They cost 9.3p/pair in Romania

As thought they are the std Octy , Leon 1 piece bushes even though not OEM but same and not the 2 piece bushes that are stiffer. I already replaced mine with those and they are not up to the job on my car that has poly bushes all round, TT front end and caster offset bushes and R32 FARB with S3 upper and lower braces and a fat 28mm Neuspeed RARB to name a few.

Should be ok though if your std ones are furbered but I want stiff..... :giggle: excuse the pun.

hi all i have been keeping a eye on this topic i have the same problem with my 1.9 tdi same year and model but i don,t get the wobble when clutch is pressed in and coasting only when load put on engine.get the wobble at 20-40 mph had a journey down to blackpool doing about 70 to 80 no wobble ever thing felt ok had tracking checked that is ok got new wishbones less than a year ago

i know the back bushs need replacing and need back spring on ns back not check subframe bushs yet waiting to see if 199 gets his sorted

I swopped my subframe, rack, arms etc today and the bushs in my old subframe bushs were absolutely shot, the spare subframe i bought the bushs in that were shot aswell.

I swopped them for TT bushs altho the lower bushs i ordered from TPS never turned up altho bowders1 says the dealer he ordered from said they were on back order until may altho the only differance in upper and lower is a spacer that can prob be fabricated anyway,
