Play in Nearside drive shaft!

Featured Replies

Hi all, was under car today just checking out a few things and noticed my rubber boot for the drive shaft (inner) has perished.... and there is a little play, pulling back and forth on the shaft itself... obviously a replacement is needed.... wil this have damaged anything else on the car?

the drivers side has no play at all

there should be a little amount of play on the drive shaft. the inner cv boot can be changed at a garage for about £60. its easy enough to do your self if your good with a spanner.

Well right side has no play, left side clunks

u sure its not your cv joint knackered if its clonking? failing that, it could be the diff in the gearbox, or it could be fecked splines. the latter is doubtfull but you never know. if you pull a drive shaft back and forth from hub to gearbox there will be a tiny bit of play. if it be a 1989 nissan micra or a 2012 bentley there will be a tiny amount of play.

Sounds like you need a new n/s driveshaft or at the least a new cv boot & the joint re-packing with grease. As Gee-man syas there will be a certain amount of movement in the cv joint as it has to have this as it rotates & moves around with the suspension. Its clunking as its probably dry of grease.

read your thread on your front end having a wobble do think this could be the problem as u have same problem

Yes i do :wall: , Very gutted as i put new drive shafts on 6 month ago, but the rubber has snapped.... think ill pack it with grease and try and bodge until i can drop it off at garage

Also dont say it could be the diff  ........... if it was it would torque steer wouldnt it?

did you change the bushes on your subframe if so did you notice any difference as i haven't had a chance to check my one,s yet

the diff was fecked on my Bora pd130 used to slap its brains out if you come on and off the throttle on the motorway. that was mapped to 184bhp and was fine for ages..

Well my mate looked at it and says it needs a new driveshaft.... he should know as he runs his own garage....

We will see Wednesday if it solves my problem

cheapest place that I found for one was jrw or something on ebay, very quick delivery and had all the vw stamps on them

Well my mate has booked it in and has got me a brand new driveshaft, so we shall see if that resolved my issues, if not then it may be the diff, i doubt it as the driveshaft is visibly knackered......

If it was the diff how much of a bitch/cost is this to resolve

I havent bothered as of yet, due to finding out that the drive shaft was buggered, i will await those results and then check, if i do both the shaft and the bush at once i wouldnt know which had fixed it lol......

New driveshaft fitted...... Mostly better although when i turn right instead of a wobble there is a rumble

Wheel bearing that side probably needs doing as well

So sounds unrelated to driveshaft then, don't want as second drive shaft being dead in 8 months lol.....

the wobble feeling has gone as far as i can tell just a rumble when turning right

Rumbling when turning definately sounds like a wheel bearing. They are a bit of a ballache to change though, your mate is not going to like you LOL

Oh dear

I dare not ask how difficult lol

Well I had to have 2 front ones done on mine, took it in to my local garage, the guy who did it owns a Leon Cupra R so thought he'd have done one before... it had to stay in for 2 days and when I got it back he was like "I am NEVER doing one of those again...!" LOL

I think the problem is you need a hydraulic press, and also the bearings have the ABS sensor ring welded to them so that complicates things

Just spoke to him, didnt seem fazed by the job, so will let him have a look tomorrow

When I watched Awesome GTI change both my front wheel bearings, I constantly thought "I'm glad I'm not doing this myself"!

The push-out force looked crazy, and carefully grinding the inner race off the hub looked like a fiddly and annoying job.

would it be easier to buy a new hub with built bearing????

would it be easier to buy a new hub with built bearing????

You can't buy just the hub and bearing assembled, because the assembly sequence would be wrong. The bearing goes in the knuckle first, then the hub into the bearing.

You can buy the knuckle fully assembled, with bearing and hub etc, but it's crazy money. The hub alone is really expensive.

The cheapest option for parts boils down to buying a new front wheel bearing repair kit from Skoda (comes with all the new nuts and things you need).

I replaced both my front wheel bearings on my mk1 octy vrs & it wasnt a bad job to do,i have a press which made it easier, you do need to grind the inner race off the hub as you cant get a puller in due to the abs ring been welded onto the hub.Its a easy enough job for a mechanic with the correct tools.Mine took me around 3 hours all in.
