Turbo or boost pipe problem?

Featured Replies

Where that big rubber thing is on top of the turbo in this photo (http://i13.photobuck...vrs/Filter3.jpg). I've always unscrewed the wide nut and lifted the engine cover off with the rubber still in place, rather than sliding it. This now seems to be an utterly stupid thing to do...

Might go wash the car now and pretend I haven't done anything stupid in my engine bay in the hope it pops out :S

Mine has the same film of oil on the part your talking about above, but it wasnt the cause of my problem, hope it will be for you because having a boost leak is crap :(

Thanks Joshb26, I did further reading and apparently a little film of oil on some of the connectors could be normal, so you've pretty much confirmed that is the case - so thanks for stopping me barking up the wrong tree there! I think if I have a leak it must be minor, I did manage to get over 50 mpg on the drive to work today, although I was sat in 5th gear at 30-40 mph most of the way. Starting to wonder if this is all in my head or something, or maybe something else causing lower than expected mpg :S *sigh* Wish I knew what the hell I was doing!

Seems like you're judging mpg on very short runs, almost on a daily/trip-by-trip basis..

What you do with your right foot will massively influence your economy, and make it very difficult to accurately compare mpg figures - you need to do it per tank or so to get an accurate reading of averages.

My long term average (according to the trip computer) is around 48mpg, but i do live in the center of Bristol, so suffer stop start traffic for a few miles every trip.. On a long run mid 60's is easily achieveable sitting 70-80.

However, the boost connectors on the VRs are crap, I would not be surprised if you've got a leak if you're hearing a whoosh noise, although I'm more familiar with whistling rather than whooshing for boost leaks..

But if I tank it, I can easily have less than 30mpg..

Thanks for the tip Ben, you're right, I do check the AVG1 mpg up at the end of every journey! And frequently I am dismayed by it. I also drive with the live mpg readout on, and I noticed a few weeks ago it started reporting "odd numbers (not extreme values or anything); it always jumps between certain numbers (e.g. 38.3, 58.6 etc), but then I started seeing numbers on it I'd never seen before (such as 66.6 lol) and wondered if that could be related to my mpg concerns.

Anyway... I am finding even if I drive a long run very steadily, it doesn't get much over 50 mpg (and this is by the trip computer). My long term average through the winter was about 43 mpg according to the computer, last summer was about 46.5 mpg and presently 44.5 - and I don't do much start/stop driving at all. Everyone else on here seems to report hitting at least mid-50s when they take it easy, so my worry is I'm loosing 10% somewhere other than my right foot.

I need to through my fuel receipts, I've kept most of them and logged the trip reading on to the back, I reckon I'm getting even less than the computer says (about 380-400 miles a tank with Miller's in it too, but I do refill when the warning comes on) and I don't drive silly most of the time. And new problem, headlight blub has gone lol (about only thing I can manage without asking on here!)

Then again, maybe I am just paranoid; drove past walls with the windows down today to see how much of the turbo I could hear.

Okay, so I had the bonnet up today and the engine cowling off. Found this pipe connection (circled red) was wobbly, I think this is the cause of my problem? I did briefly consider bodging it with some silver tape, then I worked out this was A BAD IDEA. Looks like the rubber on the end of the pipe does the actual sealing, so now guessing I need a new pipe, anyone know the part number and rough idea of a fair price?

Did also find a thin film of gunk in the pipe. Not had a chance to check the pipes to the intercooler, no idea how you even gain access but I assume you have to jack the car up and take the bumper off.

did u get the pipe?? i think i have one here in good condition but no clips with it, i thik the seals are still good on it

No because I've read apparently some play here is normal, so I can't ascertain if it's at fault or not. I plan to get handy with some washing up liquid soon so I can put this bloody thing to bed!
