Foreign ipads....

Featured Replies

Yay or nay? They are cheaper in Australia and I happen to know someone out there at the moment who I suppose could bring one back.

I'm getting mixed info from google on whether a wifi only iPad 3 would be fully functional in the uk.

Anyone got any experience of this? Not yet sure if I'd trust her to get in back in once piece haha!!

My iPad 2 was brought in Florida. It works fully in the uk, because wifi is wifi. It's the same technology whether it's in Australia or Britain. I read up lots regarding warranty, and there's nothing that says an iPad brought in another country isn't covered in the UK.

Cool, thats what I expect..... Is the charge fitting the same - ie could I just buy a uk charger?

Got my iPad2 from the USA last year, charge fitting is the same, you just need to buy the UK charger.

The only diffference with any of the ipads/iphones is the charger plug and what bands the 3g versions work on (GSM or CDMA). The 3G (and ipad 3 4G) problem is mainly limited to the USA as they are the main users of the CDMA standard.

So a wifi only one would be fine, I'd just need a diff charger? It's only about £63 cheaper, so not sure if it's worth it yet :)

Need to make a trip to Jersey, dead easy for me down here. Jersey has no VAT, so the iPad is 20% cheaper than here in the UK. eg. £80 cheaper for the 16GB Wifi. £25 daytrip as a foot passenger, a short walk to the apple store in St. Helier and back again. Just ditch the packaging and set the ipad up before leaving Jersey to minimise the risk of having to pay duty on arrival back in england.

Hmmmm I know people in jersey too! Worth a go.... Or just a holiday lol! Is it that simple?

WiFi ipads are the same all over the world..

Only issues youll find is if it breaks... Applecare can be a bit arsey.

I was more thinking about the internal functioning of the thing - it doesn't know where it came from then? Doesn't have to be attached to PCs of a certain country etc?

nope, you tell it when you set it up for the first time.

As above really, it's only warranty work that could be a problem.

I had an Italian iPhone 3g (Original, Sealed and Factory Unlocked) bought in Italy.

It dropped a few calls, so enquired about warranty; as it wasn't a Uk model, it would have had to be returned to Apple Italy.

Al.

What about a Chinese model? I have a couple of Chinese managers coming over at the beginning of April.

Wonder how much they are in China? Guess the language setup could be tricky?

IMHO it's not really worth the hassle.

Mainland China doesnt officially have it yet, and you can only buy one in Hong Kong and Shanghai by proving you are a resident there. Black market prices in mainland China for the iPhone 4s were £800 when it came out; the exchange rate has worsened since then, so about £900 at todays exchange rate and allowing for the robbing ~'!%s at the bank taking their 10%

All this despite the fact that 99% can only run the stupid things on a 2G network as Apple products do not work on the proprietary 3G network the main Chinese mobile networks use (HSCDMA).

I doubt the iPad3 will be any cheaper; most of the electronics I saw during my time there were MORE expensive than the UK, with the cheaper stuff (and knock offs), roughly in line with US prices.

No, for the price difference I was thinking not. I just wondered the implications that's all. I will prob just buy one haha!

Both my iPads came from the states with no issues :-) My iPad 1 packed in (Wi-Fi issue) and Apple UK where ok fixing it.
