If I sold my car private in the summer and cleared the loan I'd have about £2k in my hand to either use as a deposit on a new car or to buy something cheap.

What could I get that's £2k or under, interesting, seats 4 and is likely to last a couple of years without anything major going bang.

Mpg wouldn't really be an issue because without loan/finance payments I'd have more money for gas.

VED isn't an issue nothing is likely to be more than the VRS

I've a thing for big luxo barges so Autotrader brought up things like...

No idea if I'll do it but it'd be fun to run something different for a while.

Out of those id have the V8 735 beemer, looks fun, would be entertaining in the snow!

Lexus LS 400?

Lexus LS 400?

Yes a few of them about. Maybe just too ugly to bare.

Honda Legend came up too but it just seems to consume fuel without preducing much power.

Lots of 4.6 Range rovers too but I don't think they'd get through 2yr/20k without something catastrophic falling off.

I'd go for the Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag, then the Bimmer.

Classic luxo-barges :D

£2K could get you a reasonable condition 4.2 V8 Quattro Audi A8 of around 1998-99 vintage. I love my 3.7 V8 Quattro Sport, but dread filling it up, £110 to do just that at Tesco this lunchtime and my £110 will get me around 450 miles.

There is just something appealing about a car when the displacement goes past 3 and the cylinders are more than 5

A quattro A8 I could even claim would be good in winter

Always have loved XJ s though expecially the 4.0 supercharged but I think on a £2k car turbo's etc would be best avoided.

Isn't James Ruppert from Autocar running one of these as a long term test? He bought it for about £700 and all that's gone wrong so far is bulbs :sun:

Golf Gti turbo mkiv with a remap.

I've just got one as a stop gap to use for a few months.

Really good fun..

I thought about an XJ6, 740i and S500 not so long ago, but the maintenance scared me away.

I would personally get something like this and save some money towards petrol - you can't got wrong at this price, especially with with 12 months MOT and 6 months tax.

For my money it would be what I already have as a weekend car.

My Skoda is a company motor so i still have a toy.

I have a 1998 Volvo V70 T5 se with 109k on the clock and loads of history 240bhp 0-60 7.1 sec and 152 mph book figures and 23mpg using for mainly local running around inc a quick thrash now and then. Cheap insurance through Volvo (£340 full comp).

I paid £1000 for it last year and there are plenty about but the prices are low because people think they are hard to insure but cost me a lot less than it would have done for a 1.8T VW passat I was looking at.

The Jag would be a nice car but dont get the V8 as they can be trouble ( I know from experience )and are not cheap to fix.

The straight 6s are a better choice in my opinion and for £2k you may get an XJR ( 320bhp Supercharged).

Every time big motors with lots of power get mentioned in my mind I hear Tim Allen grunting from Tool Time

I'd love to have a V12 just to do it before these cars go for good. But after looking longingly at a V12 XJS they're just too expensive to run and you just know that the 2 spark plugs that are hard to get to will never have been changed.

Dunno if I'll do this come the summer but it's fun to look into.
