Engine Mount

Featured Replies

I've been noticing quite a bit of wobble recently, mostly at low revs.

Yesterday I was going up a steep in 3rd at around 2k revs, the whole car started shaking quite bad to the point where even my moobs were wobbling.

Noticed this morning that when I start the car the passenger side of the engine shakes quite bad.

So I have concluded that my mount is borked.

The more I drive now the more I notice movement, like after speed humps I'm getting wobble, I wouldn't think it were shocks as they move up and down rather side to side.

So can anyone give me a wya of checking for sure.

At this rate I'll have to buy a bra for my bitch tits !!!

Check the 'dog-bone' mount first. This is also know as the anti-torque link as it prevents rotation of the engine under acceleration. Get someone to blip the throttle as you watch the mount. It shouldn't move more than about 5mm relative to the subframe.

Next watch the main mounts. As someone blips the throttle check for movement between the engine and subframe. If one side of the engine lifts, then that side is badly worn (the rubber may be separating from the metal). Check for deteriation of the rubber (using a mirror). You can also use a prybar. Using moderate pressure, you should see very little play in the mount.

When you say check Dog bone fopr movement, do you mean it will move in and out of the sub frame ??

Yes, and that should be the only movement.

Ok cheers dude, I'll have to get help !!

I don't know if this is the same with the Octy... but I have heard and know two people it has happened to. But apparently on the mk4 golf, if the engine mounts go then the engine is prone to dropping through the bay/dropping down.

before fitting the new poly bush is crucial to clean and lube properly the mount surface wich touches the new bush....otherwise will produce vibrations.

I've done that and got zero vibrations from the first moment.

My dogbone is poly already so that should be fine....... Maybe

I am having same problems, checked the engine movement after i fitted a new dog bone mount and its wayyyyyy to much, worn out on both sides :wonder:

Job done, didn't rush, tightened evry thing upo nicely, so not as many rattles now, and the sounds deadened if that makes sense.

Think I need to do the other side now mind, to equal things out a bit.

Easy enough, trickiest bit is getting the mount lined whilst on my own, another pair of hand would have good tbh

Did you replace the engine mounts?

If you did, I hope you changed the bolts. They must be replaced or the bolts can work loose

Where did you get the engine mount bushes from m8?

Only the gearbox one for now, yeah got new bolts all round. Also correct torque on then, 40nm +90 deg on the smaller back bolts, 100 nm on the bigger ones

TPS, IIRC about £60 with my discount, bought some other bits to, haven't looked the bill yet !!

Damn thought they'd be really cheap lol
