blocked cat ?

Featured Replies

on some startups (rarely) i get blue smoke (only as the starting up takes place). this has not bothered me to much, as i've read multiple stories about it on here, plus there's absolutely no smoke while driving.

recently i've observed (with the hood open) blue-ish smoke comming out from the flex pipe while starting the car up. it lasted for about 5~7 seconds, then no further smoke was to be seen...

the exhaust fumes did smell eggy for a period, as one of the coil packs went bust (i did a 2 mile drive in this state before i had the chance to replace it).

no stored fault codes + i find the car a bit sluggish (not remapped, running on 98 or higher). i cannot comment on oil consumption as i've had some trouble with the oil sump.

am i right to consider a clogged (not necessarily blocked) cat ?

the car's done just over 110k miles now

I did 20 miles with a coilpack off and my cats fine

i'm more concerned about the exhaust smoke coming out of the flex pipe than 2 miles with a busted coilpack...

Could it not be old crud getting burnt off and seeping out of split/ damaged pipe? Fingers crossed that it's nothing serious. Ps is it down on power all of the time or intermittently?

Whats the oil level like? Too much oil can get spat through into the cat?

My old lupo gti stank of eggs from the cat when i first go it... But after a few weeks of running 98 ron fuel through it and hammering the living daylights out of it the smell had gone!

Needs a good italian tune up :)

oil never exceeded max level...

the smell persisted for more than a month, starting with the coilpack failure. right now the smell is gone

i have a friend willing to sell me a brand new factory cat for just about 160 eur, so the only thing i'm trying to figure out is if it's worth the investment...

it feels lazy all the time, yet i'm not talking about a massive power loss, it's just not pulling as it used to...

It could be the flexi pipe has broken down inside. My grandad's focus did this and it lost a lot of power. Wasn't a turbo engine though.

interesting

You could tell that it was broken as you could wiggle the exhaust from underneath, and it would move backwards and forwards by an inch or so. I think they have a pipe inside the braiding that's like aluminium tumble drier pipe and that had collapsed, causing a major leak.
