towing

Featured Replies

My wife has suggested that we buy a caravan  .Not my favorite type of holiday, but she who must be obeyed has spoken.

My Ocy is a 2010 1600 tdi.estate

What is the suitability of towing with this vehicle.

Ideally I would be looking for something like a 14 - 16 foot caravan . But i appreciate that the vehicle dictates the caravan size.

The last thing I want to do is to put unnecessary strain on the vehicle which has proven to be best practical, comfortable and reliable cars I have ever owned

 .I'de rather get rid of the wife lol.

Any advice would be gratefully received

Don't get to hung up on what length of van, it's more to do with weight, Not sure what a 1.6 can tow, but my 2.0tdi is good for 1400kg. which our last 'van was ( 6 berth )

before we had a 1180kg and the Oct'y towed that very stable at 80mph ( in France )

Have a good read on here,

http://www.caravantalk.co.uk/

tell her you looked online and its only suitable to tow some piddly wee thing and hope she goes off the idea

It will tow up to 1400 KG aim for 85% of that, when hitching aim for 75KG on the tow ball

14 to 16ft caravan will be small!

Our last two have been just under the 20ft mark and tow weight about 1150 kg.

Avoid auto boxes unless very big engines.

Engine more than 120ps and torque over 200 - otherwise you will not have a nice driving experience.

I use a 140PS 2.0l auto forester and a manual 160PS scout - chalk and cheese, believe me! They both do the job, though!

I tow a Sprite Alpine 4 (fixed bed) with plenty of room, MTPLM 1,230kg.

Kerbweight of my 4x4 is 1,500kg and the towing ratio is 82%.

Agree with your wife..............get one
