roomster written off :(

Featured Replies

just had my 07 roomster 2 1.9tdi written off by my insurers

minor shunt at 5-10mph, bumper, bonnet, n/s wing, n/s headlight, rad, aircon rad, slam panel, possibly battery were the visible damage

no visible creases or damage to innerwings,

been told repair cost just over 3k +vat

anyone know best place to find the the true value as now have the issue of arguing over the value they will want to pay me

will post full spec shortly

Search Autotrader/ Motorstoday etc. for dealer retail prices of similiar cars, and print them off. This will give you a range to take an average from, and ammunition for the insurance valuation of your car. The first offer is usually derisory.

did pay £3.95 for one of the online valuations from autotrader provided by CAPS where i could put in the reg, full spec (so takes account of option on purchase), milage (165k on an 07) and that came back more than i was told the repair was going to be (hmm!!)

found quite a few roomsters for sale, but none with anywhere aproaching my milage, so difficult to provide a like for like comparison

Guide at

150,000 miles

Average Dealer Retail £4,175 - £4,525

Private Sale Price £3,425 - £3,725

Trade In Average £2,075 - £2,200

so which price do they work to , what i would get trade in, private sale or what it would cost me to replace it?

will keep you updated

Insurers use retail price and usually the assesor will use Glasses Guide. They are willing to negotiate a little if you can show that similar replacement cars are on average sold at higher prices - Note sold price, not asking price.

Most insurers will write off cars if the cost of repair exceeds 75% of the retail market price. Your problem, is the 165k mileage on an 07 plate. No dealer would market such a car and so its value will be at the low end of valuations.

You could get a good deal if you offer to buy back the write off for a cheap price and repair yourself with the settlement. Insurers will put your car into auction or on ebay.

If the accident was not your fault, then its a different story - contact the third party insurance and insist on repair - if thats what you want.

with what i know about the car, i have decided against buying it back

if anyone sees a high milage (167k) offered for sale let me know, i was offered it back for £640 but on doing the maths, the 20-25% loss in resale value due to being a cat c write off i decided against

If you have space and time you maybe should buy it back to break it for parts, haven't seen any roomsters being broken?
