Irish Newbie Says Hello.

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm about to take ownership of a 08 Octavia 1.9 Tdi. I will drive my beloved BMW 330ci to Dublin tomorrow morning and drive home in my new Skoda.

My motivation for changing car is primarily financial. The 330ci costs €1400 a year to tax, the Octavia will cost €400. The beamer does 27 mpg, the Skoda 50+. I've managed to stretch a relatively small budget a long way to get a 08 car, but there is always going to be a tradeoff isn't there?

The tradeoff and my one slight concern is the mileage on the Skoda. It has 125,000 miles on the clock having been a reps car for the last 4 years. Does anyone have an Octavia 1.9 Tdi with that sort of mileage or more on it that could share their experience with me please?

All the reviews of the Octavia I've read have been amazingly positive and the car looks to be in great condition, so hopefully I'll be a happy Skoda owner for years to come.

Looking forward to hearing your Skoda stories!

Ian

Welcome aboard. Good to see some more Irish newbies lol.

welcome to briskoda

Hi and welcome aboard.

Hello and welcome.

Hi & welcome. As with most vehicles it will depend on how it's been driven, characteristics such as town work or longer runs etc & of course servicing/maintenance. Providing most of this is broadly positive I think they'll be a lot of life left in the Octy. I've heard of many examples happily exceeding 200k and some.

Perhaps I'll pass on your example to my lad as he's dead keen to own a bmw (2 litre, around the 200 bhp mark), when he turns 20 later this year. I think he may find out the hard way the true cost of ownership but won't be told!

Happy motoring.

Thanks for all the welcomes and the replies. I took ownership of the Octavia on Saturday. My heart was in my mouth handing over the money, but the car has exceeded all my expectations. I never believed it could be as good as it is, especially it's build quality, how settled it feels on the road, and the poke! I came from a three litre petrol, and just once on the way home did I notice I was driving a car with less torque. The car has 200,000 km (125,000miles) on the clock but feels like it has 20,000. I've done about 300 miles so far and it's doing 50+ mpg.

The only downside to it all is the slagging I'm getting from my neighbours and friends. You know, the usual "pipe and slippers, middle-aged, all down hill from here" type jokes. Mind you it feels good to have discovered the Skoda secret before they did.

:-)

Hi Ian, thought you'd like it with the added bonus of enhanced economy. Having owned Skoda's for many years I've never bothered about the usual set of related comments you tend to get, more fool them I say. Having owned my Felicia Fun for approaching 4 years you tend to develop a pretty thick skin. Best of luck with her, you may now be a Skoda convert & a frequent site visitor!
