Coolent topup

Featured Replies

I've checked all my levels today and noticed my Coolent needs topping up again for the second time is this normal I've never needed to in any of my clios :(

What's the mileage?

no it shouldn't need topping up,my brothers Fabia VRS had a problem where his car had been losing coolant through the expansion tank,it turned out to be a faulty wire going to the radiator fan.

I've topped my vrs up with about half a litre in 11000 miles. Top up with water wetter. Is good stuff :)

Hole in the rad maybe?

Happened on my Ibiza FR TDI, small hole leaking 1/2 litre a month.

The coolant should never need topping up as its meant to be a sealed system. I did 44K miles in my Superb and the coolant was never topped up, I did 99K in my Octavia and the only coolant that was added was when Ross changed the cambelt at 60K miles.

That looks normal - check the level when hot. Dont fill over the max level as the coolant will just blow out. Every VAG car I've had settles at the level in the picture (cold). Always fill with original G12++ antifreeze/water mix (30%min-50%max antifreeze). Adding just plain water will dilute the anti corrosion ability.

Our Monte was like that at a similar milege, topped it up with tap water and been OK ever since.

It's the second time in 12 months Which is why I'm concerned I did spot a few vrs on here who's Coolent looked fuller then mine

Issues with this car worry me I've never had a car that's been into the garage so much or required so much attention :(

Mine is usually bang on the plastic joint line.. I thought it needed filling a little so I got some Prestones (Mixes with anything, long life) But as I released the cap very slowly, it hissed a little and settled on the upper level line. Some time later, I did the same thing,so did the level so I came to the conclusion that the leverl was fine. It was still above the lower level and I did not want to overfill it so have just checked visually ever since, no problems!

if you are losing coolant it must be getting too hot and venting off through the expansion tank,or the cap could possibly be faulty and not holding enough pressure?

As mentioned previously the level will vary depending on temperature of coolant

You've probably had nothing more than an airlock that's been there from new and it's been venting it's way through the system. Once gone it results in a lower coolant level. It doesn't always disappear in one go. In your case it probably went in two bits resulting in the level dropping twice. Just top up and it will likely be fine. Avoid using tap water as this reduces not just the freeze protection and anti corrosion effect, but just as importantly the water pump seal lubricating properties of the coolant. Just keep a check on it.
