Is it me? Stone chips.

Featured Replies

Is it me or is the Octavia partcularly vulnerable to stone chips? I don't know if there are any issues with paint quality or if the Octy II pre f/l bluff front end could be partially to blame?

I haven't changed my driving style and am always wary to maintain a safe braking distance (even more so now I'm driving such a cracking motor). I now probably drive fewer miles than ever but cant think of any previous car that has seemed to pick them up so frequently. I have a nasty case of "road rash" peppering the front of my car although the majority of it was there from purchase.

Interested to hear owners experience.

It has a bluff front end and although the paint is quite hard, it is not what it once was, all paint was more durable when it had lead in it, I got 2 bad chips from brand new on the very 1st day! :wall:

Bluff??

I did a stone chip count today and after 13 months I have amassed ZERO but I am blessed with very good roads (90% of time) If I was back home I know it would be a different story . You have said you are assuring a good braking distance etc which is IMO the best way to defend against stone chips but its scary how far stuff gets thrown and a pebble lodged in the tread or flicked up by a rear tyre of a vehicle in front will do so at some speed, and you doing say 60mph towards it. Could try allow an even greater gap or maybe some venture shield on front surfaces.

Mine too has accumalated a few since new that will need attention.

Mine is covered in stone chips but no point worrying about them. Got the first one on my wrapped grill surround the other day so that was quite annoying.

Bluff??

Blunt.................. as in west coast cliffs :giggle:

I think there are a lot more stones around on the roads these days.

Mainly down to roadworks and the companys who dont tidy up after themselfs and the lack of road sweepers around.

Mine has loads of chips and dings on the front end and I have had 2 new screens in it,

I do a lot of miles and loads on the motorways but most of the damage was done on smaller roads.

My pre fl is covered in stone chips at the front. But the worrying part is some laquer is peelin off on my wings the paint and laquer seem to be poor quality. Im gettin my bonnet resprayed at some point soonish then getting it wrapped with stone guard which is a thick clear wrap thats made to stop stone chips maybe worth you considering getting that done before to much damage is done.

Bluff??

As in Alan Freeman?

Lets face it, the paint on the Octys is crap.

I have had the front bumper resprayed under warranty recently due to peeling paint.

The roads are also crap which doesn't help.

I looked into venture shield but i was quoted £220 for the 3M stuff to cover the front bumper and first 3rd of bonnet. I can get a respray for that money.

Venture shield is the way to go, no need for resprays. My front end still looks factory fresh :)

If you don't mind how much did you pay what was covered and where did you get it done m0bov?

Hi, it was by Paintgard in Hampshire. It was about £300 I think for the whole front inc DRLs, fogs, headlights, mirrors and leading edge of bumper. Also inc the chrome and top of rear bumper.

Yep, I noticed whilst cleaning the car last week my first stone chip right by the left front fog light. Car is 7 months old.

Had mine from new and have about 10 in 20k, this is doing better than my previous Corolla and way better than my Celica, although I did drive that er.... very progressively...

Found the paint ok, think car my Octy is easily to dent than my Corolla though.

I have just brought Skoda touch up paint, anyone got any tips?

Mine too, im thinking the same, or get it resprayed and use a harder laquer over ?

Cheers mucker great price and bonus on getting bit on rear too! I was shopping around to get this done myself when I had the car on order but was wanting to get it detailed and applied straight after and was going to be MEGA money doing it that way (my logic was to trap the shine :D ) Since mine is chip free today id prob be better getting it done at some point.

I had it done before I even saw the car in the showroom, I machined it myself not that it really needed it. Can't rate it enough, I have also put on Lamin X on the likes and mirror indicators and put carbon wrap on the underside of the mirrors.

Can you still buy that Turtle Wax colour magic polish?

my girl is in Anthracite and after using white polish it shows in every nick on the paintwork :@

i used to use it years ago and it worked quite well!
