VRS new owner - blown turbo?

Featured Replies

Hello all, only had my 2005 VRS ONE day, and I think the turbo has blown......I'm no mechanic, so I hope you guys can help......turbo is a pd150, only pulling away , 20mph tops and about 2500rpm in second when a bit of a bang, and loss of acceleration (and the dreaded black smoke every gear change), can still hear the turbo spinning in first gear, but not a lot else after that. Please help!!

Sounds like you've popped a turbo pipe off. Symptoms being a loud pop followed by a cloud of smoke and no power.

Check your pipe work. Easy fix.

Thank you so much for the quick reply, I will go have a look but what you have described is what I experienced, so I really hope it is that!! Where should I be looking (sorry, as I said I'm not mechanically minded at all!!

Have a look at the front of the engine, your looing for a black pipe 2" in diameter and with a big silver ring around it, when you fit it back in make sure it "clicks", you may need to buy a new securing clip for about £1.50 but that's alot cheaper than a new turbo

Mine popped off at the bottom on the front of the offside wing behind the bumper - had to take the undertray off to sort. Put a hoseclip round it to keep it together - lasted 40k+ miles before I sold it.

Thanks!! I'm just going to have a look......There does seem to be a louder sound from around the underside near the driver's side so I will investigate both.....thanks!!!

Mine came off on the 90 degree bend going into the intercooler. The clip was weak and pipe spat off and smoked like crazy. Also try the pipe upto the egr as the clips are just as useless there!

You both are great.......Was the pipe as described, just a clip popped off!!!

Thank you so much

That's what the forum is for! Glad you sorted it considering you've only just bought it!

Ahhhh I tell you, so glad I come on here first, I was ready to drive over to the guy I got it from and commit more than one crime!! Love the forums, coming over from the VW ones and very impressed with Briskoda!! Will pay up for membership tomorrow, and already ordered some stickers. Have to say, the VRS is MENTAL very different to anything I've owned before

Is there an alternative to using the hose clip?

I'm sure I have read on here about using thick good quality cable ties and some self tapping screws to help secure it.

Or buy a replacement pipe, bit of a poor design they wear over time and pop off easier. Guess your running more boost with a PD150 turbo.

Welcome to Briskoda also, they are a friendly bunch.

I read of people using cable ties but the hose clip was only pennies to buy, is much more secure than a cable tie and can be reused if the joint needs to be disconnected for any reason. The hose clip is only there to hold the original clip in place. Want a picture?

or samco do a replacement pipe for about £100 then use cable ties to make sure it never comes off again

Seems expensive for what you get with a Samco hose though don't you think?

As mentioned above by DRJ try some new clips firstly.

I used two hoseclips in series to get the right length:

Not really mate I paid £120 from tps for a standard 90 bend
