Reseting ecu before fitting tuning box?

I didn't bother when I fitted mine and the ECU will learn and adapt pretty quickly anyway :D

Assuming that VAG ECU's are the same as most others, the car would learn very slowly after a mod. By resetting it would check all parameters and 'learn' the new details almost immediately.

In an ideal world you'd reset after having anything at all done, even a service.

so im better disconnecting my battery for half hour before fitting?

I'm sure that'd do it, though some of the more VAG-minded boys would probably know for sure.

so what benifits would u get from resetin your ecu first?

The ECU contains a map which is basically a table of thresholds for all the sensors in the engine. If it receives a response from a sensor outside the threshholds, it will log a fault and your check engine light will come on.

It then has an area of flash ROM (ie memory where it holds info all the time the battery is connected) which contains corrective factors it applies to the values from the sensors to fine-tunes the running of the engine. It arrives at these values through a process of trial and error over time...

By, disconnecting the battery, you wipe these corrective values so the car has to learn from scratch all over again, based on the new values the ECU receives from the sensors.

This means that the car will run a bit rough while the ECU sets itself up and trial and error's corrective values for the car, but the corrective factors will be specifically for the mods on the car.

Disconnecting the battery for half an hour should be long enough to clear the flash ROM, as well as any faults which have been logged.

lot of jargon there mate, so in a nut shell shall i do it? could it make it perform better?

In the long term, I don't think it'll make any real difference. The ECU will adapt to it eventually, and whether it's learning from "nothing" or the current setup, it'll probably take as long in either case.

Rob.

When I fitted my tuning box, I noticed a difference immediately and I didn't reset my ECU. When my battery packed up, the ECU reset. The car felt no different to drive once the new battery was hooked up. Make of that what you will ;)

Just remember if you do disconnect the battery, to have the radio security code handy and to reset the one-touch on the windows :D Oh, and you'll lose all your stats in the trip computer too.....
